"Don't get mad, get even!" as the old saying goes! Have you ever found, like me, that writing about something that irks you is a cathartic experience? I do - hence the reason for this page. People or things who have "pleased me" may find their deeds listed here ... and those who have betrayed selfish or 'nasty' traits will find themselves named and shamed. If there's one thing I hate, its injustice. Oh, and selfishness. That's two things. Oh well, a brickbat for me.

| Subject: The US "deals" with terrorism | ||
| So, the US wants to meet Scottish representatives to explain why the so-called alleged Lockerbie bomber was released,
as if "compassion" and "health reasons" wasn't good enough. The US shouldn't be dictating how terrorists should
be dealt with. They (the US) have a good reputation for turning a blind eye when it suits them; just look
at their support, illegal or otherwise, public or not, of their support for the Contras etc., illegal invasions
of Iraq, illegal detention of "enemy combatants," stripping away nearly all their rights and
using torture techniques at Guantanamo Bay,
war in an enemy state (Vietnam - forget the farcical and mythical Gulf of Tonkin incident, the real reason they
were attacked were because they were commies- Cuba doesn't know how lucky it was, and that Operation Northwood
wasn't implemented!)
If these aren't the acts of terrorists, I don't know what is. Let us look back to 9/11. For years before this, the Irish St.Patrick's Day parades in Boston and New York, not to mention others, were used partially to raise funds for the IRA. Money that was used to kill our men, women and children. The US Government knew about this and did nothing. Then, September 11th, and a new hard-line front against terrorism, and the infamous "You're either with us or against us" ultimatum. The FBI made sure that websites and the like supporting "The Real IRA" were quickly shut down. This reminds me: when the UK allowed US Fighters stationed in this country to be used to attack targets in Libya in 1986, there was a national outcry. The French refused to allow the fighters to overfly their country. The "intelligence" claiming that Libya supported the bombing of US personnel stationed in West Germany is, as we now know, deeply flawed. There was an effort by the US populace to shun the UK for fear of terrorist reprisals and our tourism economy suffered badly in 1986. Then 9/11 happened. And the rest of the world shunned America. We had fawning TV adverts trying to lure us back to the US. So, to US citizens: it wasn't so nice when it happened to you, was it, but who cares, we're only the little countries.

| Subject: Copyright issues | ||
| I know that when we buy DVDs, CDs and so on, we should feel respectful of copyright holder, and their
rights to be paid a fee for viewing or listening to their work, correct? I don't include the BBC in this,
as our licence fee has paid for many great programmes and now many of them, if they survived the fiery
purges of the 1970s, are left on the shelf for ever and amen, destined never to be seen again. After
all, who wants to see some "ground-breaking" drama from the more exciting, experimental and daring eras
of the 1960s and 1970s when we can see "One Foot In The Grave" and "Only Fools And Horses" released on
DVD for the umpteenth time?
Consider this though. I bought the entire range of Blakes 7 VHS tapes in the early 1990s. The total would be about £260. Now some of them won't play due to tape degradation and its a frantic race to salvage the rest by copying them to DVD and finding replacement episodes to download from YouTube and the like. Should I be honest and buy the official BBC DVDs for a total of £60, or write off the £260, which with inflation would be worth £410 in today's money? Guess what I am doing.

| Subject: Can't pay won't pay | ||
| The so-called "credit crunch" has been unkind to a fair portion of the populace, and it is
distressing to see the heavy-handed tactics of debt collection agencies from a first hand
perspective. Despite what they say, they see nothing wrong in phoning up at any unreasonable
time, from 7.30 in the morning till 10.00pm at night, weekdays or weekends, desperate to badger
you for recompense to alleviate their obvious debt problems. Quel tragadie! For once you pick
up that phone, they will harangue and pester you until some form of debt recovery is agreed.
Fortunately, there are methods, such as last call barring, which will help. Ofcom is a toothless
tiger, it seems, as the companies wriggle mercilessly under the protection of impotent laws.
So, what can be done? Financial institutions are obviously in a bad way in the UK. They can afford to pay bonuses to staff who failed to protect them during the financial melt-down a few years back. They can afford to pay huge pay-offs and pensions to fat cat managers, who obviously need the money as they can't afford to surrender it to pay mortgages, expensive lifestyles, golf club memberships, the finest wines and designer clothes etc. And we, the taxpayer, gave them this money when the Bank of England ladled out buckets to cash to affect the afflicted. But when we, the plebs of society, plea for help from these financial institutions, we are often ignored, or some excuse is given as to why they can't assist, or, often, no excuse is given. Even after 20 years of faithful loyalty to one bank. It means nothing to them. Why should they mean anything to us? So, what can we do to revolt against the revolting? Ask for a copy of your Consumer Credit Agreement. If you didn't fill one in, or it can't be found, they have no legal recourse to pressure you for repayment. NatWest don't seem to grasp this and indeed, broke the law when they provided a copy of my credit card application form and then failed to explain why they had not provided the CCA too. Why should we feel sorry for these bastards? If they hadn't been so lax as to fail to ensure a CCA form was provided, do they really deserve payments? These organisations may not be physically bankrupt, but they certainly are morally bankrupt! They can threaten you with a bad credit reference on "your file" for 6 years, but with so much debt, are you really bothered? I'm not! If you think this will help anyone, please pass this information on.

| Recent failures of my computer equipment have prompted some remembrance of the Millenium Bug in 1999/2000. For years
beforehand, we were pestered about how calamity and catastrophe would descend upon and "life-as-we-know-it" would be
at an end.
Well, of course, it didn't happen, and the smug bastards in the press said that the bug was overhyped and never existed in the first place. Did it not occur to these simpletons that the reason there were no doomsday scenarios being played out at midnight on December 31st, 1999 was because the problem had been successfully tackled? The IT industry, particularly those companies that still used legacy COBOL applications, pulled a lot of people out of retirement to rewrite and test code; these people earned a tidy sum from rescuing banking corporations et al. from doom. Of course, there were a few case of software glitches, but these were insignificant and numbered very few. The idiots in the press berated those observers who warned us in advance of impending cataclysm. It seems that said newshounds would only have been happy if nuclear reactors ran amok, planes fell from the sky, or their salaries hadn't been paid. Quel disastre, I think you'll agree (particularly the last point).

| Foolishly expecting a great denouement in the season finales of CSI and CSI: New York, I was disappointed and not for the first time. And not for the last I suspect. These entertaining series may be good at producing standalone episodes but are seriously lacking substance in the long running story arcs, and the ones this series simply proved this hypothesis. The reason why the Dr.Jekyll killer subjected his victims to grotesque forms of torture and mutilation is never explored; we are told he wanted to be a doctor and not continue his father's heritage as a chef. And why would this maniac, and Shane Casey leave clues that enable the CSI team directly to them? I credit serial killers with more intelligence. I don't credit the writers of these series with any at all. | ||

| Subject: Christopher Eccleston | ||
| So now we know why Christopher Ecclestone left Doctor
Who in 2005; he didn't enjoy the environment and culture on the show. Fair enough, everyone has a right to leave
a workplace that they dislike and that is his prerogative. What is unfortunate is the backlash he received in 2005 when, after one
episode of the new series had been shown, had been deemed to be a big success and then the announcement of Eccleston leaving was made
public (forcing the BBC to ham-fistedly make a false statement), fans went into a rampage! The most unfortunate one was by
MegaFan Ian "me me me me me me me" Levine.
Levine, millionaire record producer who has a collection of Dr.Who episodes, scripts and props that borders on dangerously obsessive, who delights in reminding people that he was the unofficial adviser on the show from 1978 till 1986 (when Bonnie Langford joined), who saved hundreds of episodes from destruction and located many more (as if Levine did all this single-handedly including the 1983 Longleat convention which he claims to have organised), helped to rescue the show from a real threat of cancellation during the Michael Grade incident in 1985, who likes to grand-stand and take the credit for other people's hard work, and who ran a vendetta against producer John Nathan Turner because Levine couldn't get his own way (labelling Turner as a "cancer") has said 5 years ago that Eccleston was, in his opinion, "lower than a cockroach" for not carrying on with the role. No wonder some fans have given the rest of us a bad name. They should get a grip on reality for God's sake and their is little their ill-advised rants have dissuaded Eccleston from ever making a guest come-back. Little wonder then that Eccleston dedicated his "best actor" award in 1006 (?) to one of his young audience, who had obviously helped to make his part on the show more palatable and worthwhile. Eccleston didn't attend the awards show. Can you wonder why?

| Well, according to the Daily Mail, most of Britain's pensions are under threat because President Obama decided to criticise BP, and a lot of people's pension funds are tied up in BP money-grabbing schemes. While I sympathise with those people who may be financially affected by the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico (except the mandarins at BP of course), no one company should be exempt from criticism, especially when said company has endemic laxity within its ranks or operations. Like BP. And Obama does have the right to complain as it is "his" coastlines that are now saturated with black filth. | ||

| Subject: A Nation of Paedophiles | ||
| so, young Sarah Payne's murderer Roy Whiting has had his minimum prison sentence reduced before he can apply
for parole. A lot of commentary by others have decried this decision and I leave readers to find and absorb
these statements.
What I want to talk about is the parent's responsibility. Ever since the disappearance, and the later finding of the bodies of school children Susan Maxwell and Caroline Hogg in the 1980s, there have been numerous warnings that we live in a nation of predatory paedophiles, and if your child vanishes, h/she has been snatched by one of these miscreants, and is likely dead. With these warnings, what did Sara Payne, Sarah's mother do, while on holiday with her family? She let her child out of her sight. This convenient fact was ignored by the media, who were intent on portraying Sara as a latter day innocent, a martyr for the cause of lost children. This little nugget of information was only revealed in a TV reconstruction many years later. While the ultimate responsibility for the murder lies, literally, in the hands of the vile beasts who perpetrated these acts, the media have been seduced by the crying face of a mother, and/or father who could do no wrong and yet neglected their child. Like Jamie Bulger, whose mother left him at the door of a shop while she went inside to place an order, or the McCann's who abandoned their children, with no minder or baby sitter, while they went to a local tapas restaurant. These people must surely take some of the responsibility for their child's death or disappearance and I hope that they don't sleep well at night.

| Subject: More Titanic: feuds and vendettas | ||
| The news that a friend has tried to post a link to my website on the Titanic-Titanic.com (TT)
forum gave me a (possibly) mislaid feeling of injustice and anger. Mislaid because I
half expected it. I had been subject to a ban from that forum since March simply because
someone asked what had happed to Encyclopedia-Titanica and I posted a link to
this blog. Within hours I had been banned. No explanation, no three strikes, nothing. Only
Andrew Clarkson said that "I knew what I had done wrong...I broke the rules...End of." How is posting
an accurate response to someone else's question a violation of the rules? Rather bizarelly, this
"offensive" posting is still there for all to see!
Its well known that I was unhappy with Titanic-Titanic, as it always seemed to me to be a very poor man's Encyclopedia-Titanica (E-T). Many of the posters on the board ask questions without checking the inquiry transcripts, base their opnions on poorly researched books or films, and a lot of the replies to threads were simply a "I wuz soooooo sad when jack died titanic is the best film eva james cameron rocks xxx." Or, invasion of the Jack and rose brigade. Those familiar with the true story of the Titanic rolled their eyes and patiently responded to all these posts. I know, I was one of them! Then theres Encyclopedia-Titanica. Known to be in trouble due to the insane policy of asking people to pay to post to the board, this has succeeded in driving away regular posters, such as Dave Gittins, David G.Brown, etc. and some regulars (Bill Wormstedt, tad Fitch, Mark Chirnside etc.) only come back from time to time. It has even hounded out Phil Hind (the fuhrer of Encyclopedia-Titanica)'s wundkind, Senan Molony. And, the unfair policies dictated by Hind have only alienated more people from E-T, including probably one of the best technical authorities on the disaster, Samuel Halpern At a time when he should be grasping for new members, Hind is only driving them away! So, why was I banned from T-T, my friends posts removed, and why do I not post on ET even though I was given a free "pass" to post on the board? The answer to the last question lies in Mark Baber; when friends inquired of my sick wife on the board, I replied that she was OK even though a certain reprobate (who has friends on both boards it would seem and protect him) was sending me sick messages (see the entry on this page for March 23rd). My message was deleted and moderator Mark Baber replied to me personally, saying that although he sympathised with my wife's illness I was told not to wander into Tim Trower territory again, and was asked to press a button saying that "I agree"...or face "a lengthy suspension". I found this incredibly offensive and childish and never bothered to click the button; I would never have mentioned Trower again anyway but was simply responding to my friend's queries. Before this, Phil Hind and Baber deleted my posts when I mentioned a link to my Titanic website, and whereas in the past this was OK, now I was told that I was not allowed because of "inaccuracies" on my webpage; this being the afore mentioned page the details of which, with one small paragraph which I concede was not accurate and have now deleted, is true. These two (Baber and Hind, and Inger Sheil when she was a moderator on ET years in the past) were responsible for deleting posts that harangued wundkind Molony but left his own abusive messages intact. I can't help but recall other incidents. Back in 2005, E-T used to have 6 or 7 moderators. Now it has 2. The reason for this reduction? One of the moderators told a joke on an internal forum which was so offensive it caused an almost overnight exodus. Who was this risque moderator? Well, only Michael H.Standart and Mark Baber remain. Despite Standart's habit of replying to every single thread on E-T and posting nearly nothing but links to shipping news pages, I found him to be agreeable. So that leaves Baber. And, if you're interested in seeing how Baber works, do a search on E-T or Titanic-Titanic for an Australian girl called "Alyson Jones." She was infuriatingly bad at spelling but genuine in her enthusiasm for the Titanic. Baber hated her and his vindictive attacks, and eventual banning of this girl, defines the epitome of a spite-fuelled obsession. Did Baber (username MAB) stop to think that Alyson might have difficulty spelling because of dyslexia, or did he just assume that she was a typical teenager, raised on "txt spkng"? Whatever, he pursued her relentlessly from board to board and poor Aly was sick of it. If you've been redirected here, you may want to go to my Titanic pages too.

| Subject: The World Crap, er, Cup | ||
| This year's world cup has been very subdued. Maybe its because I have avoided newspapers and radios and have avoided jingoistic speeches
and the inevitable repeat playing of anthems such as the ubiquitous "Three Lions." Why do we delude ourselves that we'll get
anywhere in this tournament? When I watched previous World Cups from 1986 to the present, all the pundits said, "Well, we won it once in 1966." Yes, we won it once,
20+ years ago. If we were any good, we would have won it since then, but instead we have a team indifferent on quality and
who doesn't always qualify (remember USA in 1994?) Instead, we have the excuse for the lager louts to spout xenophobic bile such
as "Two world wars and one world cup, doo-dah, doo-dah," (sung to the tune of the "Camptown Races") when confronting Germany, or "The Hand of God/Falklands/whatever" when we
face our mortal enemies, the Nazi harbouring Argentinians. No, England's team is composed of desperate glory-seekers, the one who wants to score THE goal,
ahead of his teammates who play for a different team in England. The rivalries still show on the pitch. Watch England
play. They're all over the place! No, what we do is we struggle with feeble teams, and then when we get to the quarter finals, we'll finally meet our match and be pulverized on the pitch, and cue lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Why do we delude ourselves? We should wait till the whistle blows on the first match and then score as many own goals as possible, put us out of our protracted misery. One good thing perhaps: we aren't pinning all our hopes on just one man, like Beckham. I remember a couple of world cups back (1998 or 2002?) when the finals were significantly delayed because one of the key French players had had a fit in the dressing room and the team wanted him to recover. They lost. Then there was the incident with the famous Beckham Metatarsals and EVERYTHING pivoted on him being well enough to play. Oh, to hell with the other players! Then, in the match that saw us being sent home, rather than tackle an opponent, Beckham chose to hop over the feet of his rival...and a few minutes later, a mistake by David Seaman let a goal in, and we were out. Its just a game, yes, but games rely on team-mates and co-operation. The pages defining those words have been ripped from the dictionaries of the English team. That is, if they can read anything other than paying-in slips filled in with ludicrous sums of money, and colouring-in books.

| I enjoyed the first two installments of the Shrek series, but I haven't seen the third and don't intend
to see the fourth. The reason is the presence of one Eddie Murphy.
You see, I can't respect myself going to see a film that features a total shit like Murphy. He had his "fun" with Melanie "Scary Spice" Brown, impregnated her and then did his best to distance himself from her, no doubt worried that his millions would be jeopardised by the afore mentioned Brown in any forthcoming paternity suit. He needn't have worried. For this reason, I will boycott all of Murphy's projects. I don't think my life will be adversely affected, do you? I can live without viewing a TV re-run of the role that instigated his career, as a foul-mouthed "cop." Remember Steve Bing and his liaison with ELizabeth Hurley? Bing acted in exactly the same way: "use 'em and then lose 'em". What a shit. If you are "man" enough to "do your thing" with a girl, then you MUST be "man enough" to take responsibility afterwards.

| Subject: The 9/11 "Truth Movement" | ||
| I attended the huge "Loose Change" premiere in London many years ago, hosted by Sussannah York in the Prince of Wales
theatre; this was a DVD made at minimal cost by propagandists determined to prove that the 9/11 attacks were not the work of
Bin Laden and friends.
Free copies of the DVD were being handed out. The people distributing them all were moslems! An attempt at damage control -
"we're not all terrorists you know" ?? The audience were being whipped into a frenzy by flashy graphics and big letters on the
screen saying "Only explosives can do this." But when basic principles of physics were being mangled I couldn't take it any
more. For instance, the collapse of the twin towers was described as being at "the speed of free fall." Free fall is an
acceleration, not a speed/velocity. Another thing those pro-Conspiratorialists don't appreciate is the collapse of
the twin towers. They say that the melting point of steel is way above the temperature generated by the burning jet
fuel. "Therefore, it was a controlled demolition." NO IT WASN'T. Many hundreds of degrees before it starts to melt,
steel loses its rigidity. This is obviously what happened on 9/11. You don't need melting points,
controlled demolitions, thermite or Santa Claus driving his chariot into the towers to explain this.
Regarding the Pentagon strike: Some of my friends were in Washington DC when the plane hit the pentagon, they saw it (albeit from a distance) and heard it. But of course, it was a MISSILE that hit the pentagon, so my friends are part of the conspiracy. And why was so little plane-like debris found? Think about the insides of a plane and how much of it is empty space. And think of the wings, mainly empty space (fuel tanks). They would fold aft if they hit a robust structure, so thats why theres no hole the entire wingspan of a plane. I used to work for BAE (who make aeroplanes) and we discussed this a lot. People are forgetting one important thing: to pull off 9/11, the US Government would have to be clever to tie up any loose ends (what happened to the people if the Pentagon jet was replaced by a missile for instance?). Dubya and his cabal of cronies were NOT that clever. This does leave me in a quandary. I don't believe in the 9/11 "conspiracy" but I do believe in a plot to kill JFK. The two are vaguely similar: a coup d'etat to trigger policy change that benefits a select few. But how come I find JFK worthy of investigation but not JFK? All I ask is that I somehow get off the bloody "9/11 Truth [sic] Movement" email list. At the UK General Election, I had message after message telling me which candidate to vote for that supported a re-investigation of 9/11.

| "The Amazing Meeting" (TAM) is a congregation of renowned sceptics, some famous, some not, but in the past there have
been such luminaries as "arch debunker of all things psychic" James Randi, Ben Goldacre, Richard Wiseman and Adam Savage
(of the Mythbusters). An impressive list, and an admirable purpose, for we can never have too many meetings and people willing
to combat the steady rise of gullibility and fraud in our society.
So what am I complaining about?
A hefty £220 fee to attend, thats what! As Hayley Stevens says on Facebook,"Nice going on the 'fuck the poor people' approach to
easily accessible skepticism...they're making it impossible to attend for a lot of people who have financial
problems or committments. Basically, they're not catering for everyone and I don't know of any speaker in my mind
that qualifies [for] that amount of money." Hear, hear. Some of the massive £220 fee is intended as a donation to the James Randi
Educational Foundation, but there is no ability to opt out of this donation.
. But of course these sceptics can charge whatever they want and know that people will pay. Now who's gullible and credulous? I would love to attend but the obscene fee has put me off. And others should question it too rather than blindly reaching for the phone and credit card..

| Subject: Islam | ||
| This is one of those occasions when I wish that my brickbat rating went to 6 or higher...
News that Pakistan has banned Facebook because of its "Draw Mohammed Day" have helped to expose this vile, intolerant religion for what it is. How many times have we heard of Islam's more rabid followers publicly denouncing those who defile their previous Prophet's name and image? There has been the furore over the Mohammed Teddy Bear, the death of a Danish cartoonist who satirised Mohammed (and perfectly justifiably under the laws of freedom of speech in his country, something the Muslim's just can't accept) and now, Comedy Central bleeping the name "Prophet Mohammed" in "South Park." I wish I lived in a country where such hate is outlawed, and the Muslims who organise parades to draw attention to their oh-so-pitiful plight could be made to see how evil all this is, and, better still, to ban such demonstrations. They burn effigies in the street, hoist placards high demanding the death of anyone who they don't like..but our laws can't or won't stop them. Freedom of Speech is one thing, but this is another. Why have their been so few prosecution of the maniacs?
Don't get me wrong here, I am sceptical of most religions, but I have a special place in my heart when it comes to
Islam, the infamous women-repressing religion (if there weren't so many people sucked into its vile embrace, I would call it a cult, on
par with Scientology, but at least that doesn't advocate murder when it comes to views being
spouted that they don't like). My dislike of Islam goes back many years: when "The Last Temptation of Christ" came out,
Christians were upset and organised peaceful protests and picketing of movie theatres. When "The Satanic Verses" came out,
Muslims wanted the author dead! Over a BOOK! I'm not trying to portray Christianity as better than Islam.
I don't care in religion, full stop, but I am amazed and disturbed at the lack of tolerance in Islam.
Some other points: The evil old man the Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa over "The Satanic Verses" because it
defamed Islam in his opinion and of course, all Moslems were up in arms and declared Salman Rushdie to the
the devil incarnate etc. without actually reading the book. The actual reason for the Ayatollah's proclamation is that the
frosty relations between the West and Iran started to melt after the 1979 US Hostage crisis, and the Ayatollah didn't
want this. He wanted to maintain the animosity and so stirred up this bogus hate campaign.
Muslsms yearn for death. Why do they have children then? To continue with the crazed middle eastern cult of suicide bombers?
And if they do want death, why don't they just offer themselves as candidates for target practise to Western troops?

during the show made me confused and think positive of Joe.
And then the coda. When I learned that Joe's sister was Vonda's next door neighbour, my jaw hit the ground and I had to rewind the show just to make sure that I had heard correctly. I was stunned. The first 45 minutes of the show were mundane and didn't tell me anything I didn't know (cold reading etc) but the end was spell-binding and a spectacular expose for one's of Britain's "rising stars" on the psychic circuit. Joe's flexibility with his readings were worrying - mentioning an "affair" that didn't happen and then trying to make a joke of it, not mentioning that he must have seen one of his sitters driving a Mini, and then "picking" up on that later as a piece of psychic information. But believers will remain believers, sceptics will remain sceptics, but the last 2 minutes were incredible. It does show that, when presented with a long stream of information, people will remember the good points and quickly forget the bad, even if the latter far outweighs the former. And why did Joe ask to go to the toilet everytime he visits someone's house? Was it to snoop around and try to gather additional clues? And why didn't Joe get the name of the pseudonymous sitter? If you can get a copy of this show, you should watch it.

| Subject: Election 2010 | ||
| Just a few thoughts about the fiasco that is the UK Election 2010:
Exit Polls: although these were proved to be right, we shouldn't be so complacent. Remember 1992, when every poll was wrong and the Grey Robot got back in? From the very beginning of the election, everyone assumed that the exit polls were correct. "You haven't got back in" Labour was told. "You haven't enough for a majority," the Tories were told. No one knew for sure. The Daily Mirror In a triumphant, gloating tone, that surrogate toilet paper, the Daily Mirror depicted a huge picture of David Cameron and chums, saying that this picture shows them to be unfit to lead. Tell me why exactly? Why is a snap of Cameron and chums such as Boris Johnson in hooray-henry Oxbridge/Etonian suits a testament to someone's unwilligness to run the country. It isn't, is it? Voting fiasco Many complained that they got to the polling station only to be turned away when the doors closed at 10pm. Could they not have got their sooner Some people do work double shifts, I agree, but the polling stations opened at 7am, and you could have submitted a postal vote. Many of the whingers and whiners said that there weren't enough staff to process the votes, but if people didn't leave it till the last minute, there wouldn't have been such a queue! Several people interviewed this morning said that they saw the queue at 7pm, thought it was too long, came back at 8pm, thought it was too long, and only decided to queue at 9pm! Perhaps if these people had spent less time in, say, the pub, rather than queuing, there wouldn't be this mess. Claim scandal MPs Nice to see that many MPs who abused the system by fleecing the claims system (even though they bleated that "it was within the rules") were not re-elected. But shame on those people who voted for them anyway. Theres a special place in hell reserved for these idiots in the halls of hell, somewhere between the fiery pits labelled for "stupid" and "selfish" people.

| Subject: Titanic Cruises in 2012 | ||
| With only 23 months and counting to the 100th anniversary of a pivotal
event of the 20th century - the sinking
of the Titanic - many people are already safely (!)
booked on a recreation of that fateful, fatal voyage. I hope they enjoy it.
I won't be one of them. I was booked onto a voyage that a Bristol based entrepeneur named Mike Cowlard was putting together. I first heard about this in early 2004 and agreed to be a guest lecturer. Then things started to go wrong. I heard tales of people who had to pull out of the cruise but found Mike reluctant to return their deposits. One unconfirmed story is that a gentlemen from Nottingham took Mike to a small claims court for his money back. Mike coughed up. In the last telephone conversation I had with Mike a year ago, he said that, since he wasn't a registered Travel Agent, he couldn't book or plan a cruise, so he approached local travel firm Miles Morgan. Certainly, when Mike started all this, his website was plastered with "ABTA" symbols, but these all vanished after a time. Anyhow, at the end of 2008 Mike produced a very plush website called "Destination Titanic" advertising the ship MV Balmoral, and with a plethora of details. Within weeks, this website had been ordered to be taken down. Why? Miles Morgan had poached the concept and ejected Mike from the enterprise! I don't know how Myles Morgan have the cheek to claim the Titanic cruise as their own. Mike's email in December 2008 in addition to mentioning the Balmoral,also said that there was now a planned dog-leg in his transatlantic crossing to visit the huge Titanic cemetary in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A few months later, these details were on Morgan's website! Mike Cowlard claimed that he will have some news in April 2010, but I doubt that there will be two cruise liners vying for space at the Titanic's old dock in Southampton in 2012. I also don't see how two liners doing a wacky races cruise to the wreck site is dignified for the occasion, either. By the way, April 2010 came and went without any announcement. I was alerted to the shady business when I contacted Miles Morgan a year ago asking about my money and they said they had no record of me being booked on board. Alarm bells started going off, so I contacted Mike. He said that only a few people had dropped out, and that he was using a (named) ex-Cunard Commodore to broker a deal with Cunard to lease a ship. The Commodore denies this and says that contact with Mike was only very infrequent and that he had no agreement with him. In late 2009, my wife and I were in serious financial problems. We asked Mike for £1000 of our payments back and he happily paid up. But when we asked for the balance of £1800 back a few months later, he was nearly uncontactable. Telephone calls were not returned, emails unanswered and a letter to his home address did not elicit a reply. Even a reporter from Bristol could not contact him. I mentioned this on a Titanic messageboard and that I was thinking of taking legal action. Within a day or so, Mike was in contact, saying that he had received my letter (sent 10 days previously - so why no reply), and I eventually got my money back after a failed promise to send me a cheque never materialised. Others received their monies after similar torturous journeys. I don't know who I blame more. Myles Morgan for not agreeing to go with Mike and honour his bookings - and Morgan is selling out fast so that people like myself will have nothing in 2012 - or Mike Cowlard for being opaque about his plans. He has let no-one know what he has been doing for some 6 years. Some of his guest speakers were getting upset and annoyed at the lack of communication and many privately told me that they wanted to drop out, one of whom (Claes-Goran Wetterholm) was even listed on both Cowlard's and Morgan's website. Now the page listing Cowlard's list of speakers has been removed. A rival expedition, organised by Titanic enthusiast Bill Willard looks more promising. Setting out form Boston, and with an impressive list of names already on board, Bill hopes to beam live ROV images to his ship, the Azamara Journey, when she reaches the wrecksite.

| Subject: Linux | ||
| Linux evangelists have long commented on the fact that now that the OS has a mature GUI, loads of applications and can even run Windows programmes (to a point anyway...), we should soon be heralding the breakthrough of this maverick OS from its place on the server to desktop. True, most people will want it for things like office applications and there is a competent rival to MS Office....so why does Linux's share of the marketplace only about 4%? If my experience is anything to go by last night, the answer is obvious: upgrading packages is a worrying, tedious rigmarole. People don't want to type loads of commands into a shell (think: DOS prompt), they want to click on a button and be done with it! They don't want to worry that they have to go searching for a package of files is compatible with Redhat, SuSE, Ubuntu etc. They want it to load and not worry about it. Yes, windows security may be lax, but by God, its easy to use, and thats what people want! Until Linux is re-thought to make it as easy as possible to use, it will never be accepted into people's homes. Mac OS X is based on a unix kernel, and they don't seem to have this usability hurdle, so why should Linux? Is it because its developed by geeks and nerds who know how to programme but little concept of how to make something user friendly? | ||

| Some people have asked if my previous comments about the election is somewhat hypocritical, and that "If you don't vote, you can't complain about the current standards of the Government." But this is unfair. I don't see any of the main parties as worthy of my vote, I'll never vote BNP, and as the others...they have their faults. Should I vote for another party even though it'll be a wasted vote? I wish the ballot papers had a "None of the above" box to tick just to register a protest. | ||

| Subject: My return | ||
| Hello everyone,
Apologies for my absence if you expected some meaty, scandalous updates, but a few recent brainscans showed up a few worrying abnormalities which are being investigated. I was a bit loathe to publicise this in case that venomous worm Trower emailed me saying "I hope you have a tumour and die," which is to be expected given the message he sent to me about my wife. Of course, in the UK were are besieged by election fever. Oh, sorry, is there an election on? My apologies. Its so low key you wouldn't notice it. Oh yes, there has been the widely touted TV debate, but we have not seen one canvasser here in my village. Oh, is this supposed to be a bad thing? I would tell them where to go. I remember the Tory years very well, and the devastation they inflicted upon my home region, the North-East of England. No thanks to "the party of greed." Labour have lost the right to govern in my not so humble opinion. That leaves the Liberal Democrats as the only potentially viable "third force." They too, have shown themselves to be a slimy, duplicitous bunch of shits too. I remember Charles Kennedy only a couple of years ago. He seemed polite, amicable and a good leader. A potential PM in my view. Then he was forced to admit that he had lied and had a drinking problem. And why shouldn't he be evasive about this highly personal issue? I had a craving for alcohol many years ago, and whilst not as bad as Kennedy's, it seemed to me to be a shameful episode, something that need not be publicised. So, what did Kennedy's peers do? Offer support and stand by their leader in this crisis? No, they ousted him. Shocking and disgusting. I imagine if he'd said that he had depression, they would react in the same way. And then theres the long running fiasco about the Icelandic volcano. Call me a nihilist if you want, but I would rather BA et al. lose £35 million a day than risk just one person's life. Perhaps they should watch this? The upshot of all this is that many of Britons are stranded overseas, and, according to the papers, are being exploited by greedy banks and hotels overseas as they wait for their rescue flights. Ironic then that British hotels screwed stranded US holidaymakers who were forced to use their facilities when air flights were suspended following 9/11. In that case, kind hearted Britons came to the rescue and put up many of the destitute in their own homes for free. "We will make a fortune out of a crisis."

| This week is the 40th anniversary of Apollo 13. Might be an opportune
moment for me to say that, while I enjoyed the Tom Hanks movie, I thought
it was a bit deplorable that Jack Swigert, who of course is not around to
defend himself, is portrayed as the outsider in the film. If the tensions
between the Apollo 13 crew existed in reality anything like they did in
the film, the crew would have been pulled, and the backup crew assigned.
I don't know what Lovell or Haise thought of the depiction of Swigert in
the film.... more revisionist history, like in 1997's "Titanic" where
James Cameron assured us that "its accurate." Crap. "Dramatic license" -
a euphemism for "we can say what we want.
It must be great to be a celebrity. You can get away with things that "the plebs" would long ago have been arrested and sent to prison for. Kerry Katona would have her kids taken off her, after the weekends' latest drug addled exploits. And Pete Dougherty? How many times has he been let off with a caution?

| It looks like my cyber stalker has "got the message" after he spectacularly exposed himself by detailing
most of his messages on the Titanic newsgroup, showing how he would gloat at being
able to see this blog and read my Facebook page even though we weren't friends. To prevent him from
seeing my FB profile, I had to unfriend a lot of mutual acquaintances. Offering voluminous apologies
I then unfriended about 8 or so people, saying that the cyber stalker had
asked, disgustingly, if I was planning to "off" [ie kill] my wife before myself, and that my
wife was in hospital, and that I was rescinding the friendship to prevent
the stalker from seeing my profile via their walls (I know now of a better way to
block people). Stupidly, I expected my friends to come forth and offer
support and denounce the behaviour of the stalker. Only two did. The rest were people
I had thought were my friends and yet they have obviously decided to side with
the stalker and his query to "off" my wife. I have not heard from them since. The well being
of myself and my beloved apparently means nothing to them.
They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

| Finding the last of the remains of the Moors Murder victims,
Keith Bennett, would provide some precious little comfort
and go a way towards closure
for the families of the unfortunate innocents, the police
who diligently worked to bring the evil scum to justice four
decades ago, and the public who have shared a collective horror
at the atrocrities committed. Four of the victims have been
found; the last, that of Keith, remains somewhere on Saddleworth
Moor. Myra Hindley took the secret of his location to her grave,
and Ian Brady, in a last, and continuing
act of contempt and defiance, refuses to give
any further information. We applaud the courage and determination
of Keith's mother, Winnie Johnson and her family and friends, in acting
to end this most disgusting and shameful of crimes.
But others seek to subvert the campaign of Mrs.Johnson to find Keith for their own aims. The psychics and their supporters.
I have seen mentioned on the Facebook website, comments from psychics'
supporters, "What a shame they can't find Keith."
So, if the psychics can't find Keith (and if they can't, it raises questions about how truly "talented" they are), then the only other reason is that they won't find him...which again raises the spectre of just how moral these people are. It all boils down to "can't" vs. "won't". And on both of these counts, the psychics have shown themselves to be failures. So,why trust these charlatans?

| Another great "Air Crash Investigation", this one about the Russians shooting down KAL 007 in 1983.
I'm surprised it didn't include two items; the first being a comparison, as a previous
documentary on the disaster did, of a barely lit 747 and the US spy plane that had
been circling the area previously. The two, from a distance, and from behind, were
very close. The other is a bit more contentious. I remember a news item in Scientific American
from 1988/9 about a transcript that the Soviets had released. The CIA had announced that
the released tape seemed to be spliced, as the hiss levels changed abruptly during the course
of the recording. Was this evidence of Soviet tampering, or just proof that the CIA had
itself doctored the tape to make the Soviets appear much more evil than they were...?
At least Air Crash Investigation didn't give much credence to the rumour that people from flight 007 were being used as slave labour on the ground, and the whole "shot down" story was a sham. In fact, there was no mention of this bogus story at all.

| A few days ago I noticed an article in a UK newspaper saying that, due to the ready availability of radiological (?) material, a dirty bomb attack could be likely by terrorist groups. Perhaps in the immediate run-up to the General Election, the Police will foil a major incident, which will be hailed as a success, leading to a re-election of the Labour party. The Tories used similar "feel good" tactics in 1982 after the Falklands War. And thus was the election stolen. | ||

| Saw a great new edition of Air Crash Investigation a few days ago. It told of how an aircraft

the disaster blamed an air traffic controller, who was distracted, a ground radar that was broken even though it
had been requested months previously to be repaired, and a bright light in front of the controllers which
impaired their vision. In a moment of irony, the three letter abbreviation for
the airport (Los Angeles International) was displayed on screen - "LAX".

| Why are the Chinese so wary of the internet? Why do they oppose Google's "net freedom" policy? If its to defend against unsavoury ideas like child pornography, great, but I think theres another reason. Its to defend their populace against unsavoury ideas and concepts, which might provoke democracy protests like Tianenmen Square, or uprisings about Tibet, Falun Gong or anything that would disturb the status quo. For, the best way to maintain a silent population is through fear, threat, disinformation... and censorship. Stand up to them, Google...indeed, anyone stand up to them! | Subject: Socialised Health Care in America | ||
| Obama's plan for socialised health care in America looks like it will finallybe adopted into law. And not a moment too soon either. The opposition to "health for all" has been disturbing and was the greatest moral opposition to plans I hadto migrate to the US over a decade ago. Michael Moore's excellent film "Sicko" has only served to reinforcethese feeling. Oh dear, I've said the dread "M" word and I can just sense dozens of Americans, chuckling as they reachfor the 'back' button on their browser, thinking that this confirms me as beatnik. Hear me out.Why do many US Citizens oppose this American version of Britain's National Health Service? One argument isthat the plan has been foisted upon the US public without much in the way of discussion by those it willimpact the most - the public. Those who don't have some form of medical insurance will be "fined" (so theregoes the Principle of Freedom of Speech), many may find their taxes increased...etc. But lets look at it another way; under Obama's plan, you may not necessarily be bankrupted for your medicalcare, or refused medical insurance if you don't satisfy the policies. You may not actually die, imaginethat! And what about those people born with a congenital illness, or affected by an ailment through nofault of their own? Under the old scheme, the plan was "f**k them; stick them on a gurney at the countyhospital and hope for the best. Its not my problem." Now, for such people, especially those with no money,there is hope. Now you can become ill in America without having to be rich. Of course, some people are concerned that their taxes will pay for "bailing out" someone else'spermissive lifestyle; the obese person who contracts heart disease. But, think again, what about thosechildren, born with AIDS, or who get cancer. Do you turn your back on them? No, I think that US citizens who don't like this health plan, and don't harbour any thoughts or concerns of compassion for their fellow less well-offcountrymen/women, (especially the Republicans Senators who voted against the plan), are actually selfish, vile, evil people. But here's the paradox; Americans have shown themselves to be very generous with the dispensation of aid and support (the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Haitian earthquake etc.) but perhaps not too good when it comes to caring for its own people (the US Government were slow to respond to Hurricane Katrina, and the ill-health of the firefighters after 9/11)...so what is the problem?Our NHS may not be perfect, God knows, (it has far too many managers and this stifles the good work they do, forinstance), and it may put a strain on the finances of the United Kingdom, but by God, it shows that we care. Unfortunately the "anti" lobby chose to try and tarnish our NHS's reputation during their attempt to stifle Obama-care. They should look to their own problems, or are they under the financial grip of the powerful medical insurance companies? | ||

| Subject: The Pale Skinned Mekon Rises From The Dead | ||
| The UK Satellite Channel, Living TV, well versed in broadcasting
dubious programmes relating to the dead (Most Haunted and its ilk) showcases
another of its delirious infatuations this weekend - "Jade: A Year Without Her";
Already recovering from the excessive overexposure of the "prima donna of the stupid" reality
TV 'star' Jade Goody, where every single hiccup, every single gasp for breath, every
single blink of an eyelid in the last few months of her life as every sap of potential exploitation
was drained slowly from this living cash cow, we now have another documentary.
Please God, no. By rights, Jade should have disappeared from our lives after "Big Brother" some 8 years ago. But no, the simple girl from Bermondesy, who had "won" the hearts of the nature because of her stupifying stupidity ("East Angular? Thats abroad," and many others) went onto a succession of galling junkets and publicity deals. "She did well, didnt't she?" coo her eager fans. She did, but through not fault of her own. So, we had books (ghost written), magazine articles (ghost written) and perfume (chosen when she just sniffed a sample and said "OK, yeah"). She became extremely rich much to my chagrin. I have worked hard through my life and never had any of the chances that Jade had, simply because she was on "Big Brother", picked for inclusion because the producers needed an inadvertent jester, a brazen simpleton to laugh at. As Lorraine Kelly, no reservoir of intellect herself, put it, Jade had become the pinnacle of the "cult of stupidity." But then the tide turned. Her pals in the press, who had demanded that she be vilified for being irredeemably stupid in the initial "Big Brother" house, clenched her to their bosoms, becoming their next Vera Lynn...until Jade was exposed a racist bully. Suddenly, it became fashionable to diss Goody again...something that would only disappear when her fortunes took a turn for the worse. For, while on a face saving publicity expedition to India, she was told that tests for cancer had come back positive. And it was terminal. Now, with her one armed lesbian thug mother Jackiey Budden, the press collectively welcomed her back into their affections. Pathetic hypocrisy. Goody and her cancelled, but rapidly reinstated, media contracts were soon thrust back into our lives. Ad nauseum, as the cliche says. Goody claimed she was doing it to provide for her son's future through lucrative TV deals, but now that details of her will have been revealed, we see that most of her £3 million wealth was gleaned from events before her cancer was diagnosed. So, she wanted to make money for her kids? How much more did she want to make? Hadn't she made enough with 'her' magazines, books etc.? The true reason was, I feel, exposure. She wanted everyone to know she was dying, wanted people to feel sorry for her, and people to forgive her for her - now conveniently forgotten - racist and bullying rants, captured on tape for all to see. What a pity her other exploits have been forgotten by the masses; trying to repair an intercom system with a pair of scissors that nearly blinded her...grinning at a photographer's camera while using a mobile phone while driving...preferring a party lifestyle to having a routine check that would have saved her life. Now she is revered as a martyr for young girls and smear test. But how nice to have celebrity friends like Elton John who donate their country mansion for Goody's wedding, captured on camera for Living TV. Only content with maximum exposure, why couldn't Goody have faced her demise with dignity and decorum, like actress Wendy Richards, who chose to pass away distant from the gleam of bright lights and whirring tape machines? So, now Jade Goody is no more; this waste of carbon has passed away, but her gene pool survives in her brethren, God help us. At least Jade's putrefying remains are doing some good now as fertiliser and aren't pleading for a camera shoved in its face. What a shame Michael Parkinson didn't have the courage to issue his rant before Goody had died. His words are accurate - Goody was a representative of "wretched Britain."

| David Tennant's departure from Doctor Who upset many people; frequently cited as the mostpopular actor in the role since Tom Baker left in 1981. Many people were dismayed, wanting himto stay longer. Some people were angry. He couldn't commit to a full seriesin 2009 because of the stage version of "Hamlet" so a succession of 'specials' [and I usethe word loosely] were made. Cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth; if only Tennant hadresigned before the specials were commissioned, a new actor could have been castand we would have had a full series. How selfish the detractors yelled! Tennant's portrayal of the Doctor was not widely liked in this household,and his interminable appearances on television over the Christmas period onlyserved to irritate. The penultimate episode of Tennant's reign invoked suchapathy that it took three months for this reviewer and his wife to stomachthe end of the 10th doctor. I found it underwhelming, but at least it wasconsistent, maintaining the "quality" and "standards" of the last fewyears. Why don't I like the current series? Its is hard to define tangiably, but theover-reliance on Tennant rattling off vital plot points at break-neckspeed, usually with an over abundance of idiotic and unneeded grinning andgooning, while said explanation were buried beneath an avalanche of techno-babble, does NOTmake for good television. Good examples of this are the whole of "The Runaway Bride"and the final episodes of the 2008 series, when the Doctor met Davros again.Play it again, and see what I mean. It doesn't make any sense. Why do viewersignore this? It probably happened so fast, it rushed past them, unnoticed.After all, who needs plots when you have loud music, an attractive actor,gorgeous (in same cases) assistants, great sets and special effects, andmonsters? Its great "switch off your brain and vegetate" TV, with oneeye firmly on toy sales. I doubt if children could care about the ramshackleplots; speaking or experience, as a 70s child brought up on Tom Baker, wewanted mosters! Any story that lacked these were buried in the subconscious.Kids these days are just as shallow: action, monsters, glitz! Hence the reasonwhy the A-Team beat Dr.Who firmly in the ratings in 1985/6; when the much morecerebral "Robin of Sherwood" started on ITV, it changed the situation and Dr.Who began to creepup the charts again... High audience appreciation values and ratings are no guarantee of quality;look at "The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures" episode entitled "The Mona Lisa'sRevenge." Albeit made for the kiddies, many people rated it as enjoyable.It was dreadful! Be honest! No, I think the reason why I don't like "New Who" is because the stories seemlike concept stories. They feel as if a committee has sat around a tableand come up with ideas which are cobbled together: "We haven't done a storywith Queen Victoria yet...." "Oh yes, you're right, and we haven't done a werewolfone yet either...." pipes up a contributor. "I saw the Matrix last night, lots of Kung Fu in that,"ponders another member of the production team....and so a story is born...and then lateron Agatha Christie is somehow muscled into a plot involving a giant wasp....and "oh, we haven't ever doneone in Pompeii yet!" Strewth! This never happened in the 1970s. Say what you like about the seriesthirty years ago, but the writing was good, explanations were clear, and the plotkept you rivetted. The spectacular writing of Robert Holmes has been superceded in favourof the set piece stories of Davies et al. The first series of New Who was muchbetter, with clearer writing. Oh, and lest we forget, theres always the good old Sonic Screwdriver! It can getyou out of anything: want a computer reprogramming? A door opened at 100 feet? Analysisof DNA? Stop the winch on a window-cleaner's platform? Don't worry, ol' sonic will come toyour rescue. Lazy, sloppy writing. Its for this reason that the Screwdriver waswritten out in 1982 as it was providing a much too convenient escape tool. Why not letthe doctor and his friends use their wits to solve problems? As I write this, more points emerge from my murky mind. When John Nathan Turner(the producer from 1980 to 1989) called Dr.Who similar to the "Morecambe and Wise" showhe came under attack from critics who accused him of letting too much light entertainmentfilter into the show. The critics were selective in their statements, as Nathan--Turnerhad elicited the comparison because "everyone wants to be in [the show].." This iscertainly true of the series today and not to its benefit in some cases. RecallPeter Kay? I shudder, but then again, not even Gilegud or Olivier could salvage thedreadful mire that was "Love and Monsters." Oh and don't forget continuity! Dr.Who's track record has never been very good,but, please, come on! Tom Baker's Doctor fell from a lower height than heightTennant in "The End of Time part two" but that didn't trigger a regenerationin this latter case. Oh, and then theres the Master (I won't go into the publicschool boy portrayal by John Simm, a far cry from the fabulous Roger Delgado)....wasn'the on his last regeneration in 1981? And wasn't he "eaten" by the Tardis in theMcGann movie? Never mind! No, one thing that I dolike about the new series is that is has moredepth than the old 1963-1989 version. It shows that there are consequencesto the Doctor's actions. While he and his friends scamper off to the Tardispeople are left behind, and they may have to rebuild their lives. When the Doctortook Rose for a joy-ride in the TARDIS, she was returned much later than theDoctor thought and her distraught mum was making missing person posters.Would you imagine seeing this for Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Peri Brown et al.Indeed, this reliance on "familiar" characters such as Mickey and Jackie promptsome writers to compare New Who to that of a soap opera. It never happened before, exceptfor the Doctor returning to UNIT HQ, so why now? No, a much better show is the spin-off "Torchwood": Dr.Who is encumbered by nearly 50 years of history and this is limiting it. Torchwood is new and canbe anything; the characters don't always tell the truth, have questionable pasts, use guns and areabove the law. "Children of Earth" was disturbing and rivetting, something I honestly can'tsay of Doctor Who, even though it did have elements of 1979's "Quatermass" thrown in. It was a goodhomage, in my humble opinion. Tennant's departure and that of master overseer Russell T.Davies may promisea much needed regeneration for the show, but it remains to see how much theimage change introduced by the new team will appeal to the established foundation of viewers. So 5 bouquets for Torchwood and 3 brickbats for Dr.Who, leaving 2 in Russell T.Davies favour. I saw the image below on the internet (can't recall where). Seems quite apt. ![]() Click for a larger version | ||

| Is it just me, or was the 1 hour edition of "Ghost Hunters" at the Spalding Inn just a big advertisement
for an establishement that is coincidentally run by Jason and Grant, founders of TAPS and

Then there was this week's "Mysteryquest" about the hunt for the Zodiac Killer. A 40+ year old memory lodged in the recollections of a retired Police telephone operator is used to (maybe) corroborate a tape recording of a Zodiac suspect. Why weren't the other two who heard his voice asked? Admittedly, one was a survivor of the maniac and probably wouldn't have cooperated with the show. Then there is DNA from this same suspect, but without anything to compare to, its useless. The SFPD refused to help and the suspect's DNA (the suspect died in 2004) was sent to the authorities in the hope that they would do the comparison. And thats the last we heard of it. And then there is one cryptoanalyst who suggested that three lines of a cipher may contain clues to the Zodiac's identity. Thats "may". So what is this clue? We are never told. It almost as if the programme makers liked to dangle a carrot at the audience and snatch it away, giggling, "hee hee, we're not going to tell you." Bloody frustrating.

| Subject: Browser choice | ||
| Microsoft aceded to the EU's directive that it offers more choice to it users
when deciding which web browser to use; the fact that Internet Explorer is
offered by default on Windows was harmful to competitors who developed
their alternate browsers. But some people
still aren't happy.
A web developer named Richard Quick is concerned that the choice is till limited
because many browsers rely on implementations of the same rendering engine - the heart
of the browser that works out the layout of elements on a webpage. This part
of his argument makes sense. You may, say, 12 browsers to choose from, but
only 3 or 4 rendering engines.
But the second part of his argument is fallacious. The BBC website quotes him as saying, "If you choose IE you will get pages rendered the IE way," he said. "But if you choose these browsers you will get the pages rendered the IE way too." This is ridiculous. The layout of the pages depends on how the writer of that pages devises it to look...unless of course the browser "decides" not to follow the conventional rules and conventions (like early version of Internet Explorer). After all, it I wrote a book (and I have!) and specified the font and size, page size, margins, picture layout, paper weight etc., and I sent the file off to half a dozen printers, it would come back looking the same. So, why bother getting annoyed at how IE lays out pages, or how Firefox lays out pages? How it does it may be of superficial importance, but the end result is what matters.

| Subject: Manchester Air Disaster 1985 | ||
| I am a fan of the TV series "Air Crash Investigations" and I was delighted to see
it back for a new series last night. The first installment focussed on the Manchester
air disaster in August 1985, where 55 people died mostly due to smoke inhalation after
an engine caught fire before take off. The technical reasons were fascinating, but not
as fascinating as the psychology of survival. The programme interviewed a lady
who organised a re-enactment of the disaster to determine how people react when faced with
a life threatening situation. The resultant scrum was predictable, with shoving and pushing,
but the most disturbing part was the second part of the re-enactment where the lady told people
that the first people off would win cash. The difference between the two
simulations was worrying; the second one now showed people climbing over
seats and manhandling their fellow "passengers" in their struggle to "escape."
Not only does this replicate the real life disaster perfectly, but it also
demonstrated just how greedy people were for a little bit of money.
Topical, as today a study emerged on the difference between the sinking of the Titanic and the Lusitania (which was sunk by a U-Boat torpedo in 1915). The Titanic passengers and crew acted with decorum and dignity until the end; the Lusitania's situation was a mad free-for-all, no "women and children first" here. The difference is that the Titanic took 2 hours and 40 minutes to sink; the Lusitania took only 18 minutes. So, a big bouquet for the TV show, a brickbat for exposing the greed of the re-enactment participants.

| The BAFTAs, yes those Hollywood wannabes, have apparently listed James Cameron'sAvatar as a contender for "Best Picture" and it is widely assumed that it willwin this category. I just hope Cameron remembers the BAFTA's snub of "Titanic" in 1998. A widelyrevered movie, a box office smash, winner of a cartload of oscars, it was also up for many BAFTAs too. It didn't win any of them. Thats right, all the effort spent on costumes, make-up, sets, special effects, etc. and it didn't win anything.No doubt the BAFTA people were smarting about how such a collosally expensive movie was so popular ( think "Waterworld," think "Heavens Gate" ) and that home-grown talent had missed out to "Titanic" in 1998. Of course, an expensive money just can't be any good, by definition. I recall that a one-off"people's special award" went to the awful "The Full Monty". Why didn't it go to a morepopular movie, like "Titanic"? Hubris. If I were James Cameron and I won a BAFTA for "Avatar," I would yell "I'm the King of the World!"and then throw their pitiful statuette across the auditorium before giving a digitus impudicusto the mandarins in the audience. | ||

| Subject: Education or Entertainment? | ||
| Where the does the boundary between education and entertainment
lie? In a televisual context, it could be anywhere.
With plenty of time on my hands, I devour factual programmes. I don't rely on them to bolster my knowledge as they sometimes have "hidden agendas" and are very sensationalised. I prefer to do my own research if the topic fasincates me sufficiently. Then, and only, do I get a sense of betrayal as to what has been omitted. Two of my favourite shows are "QI" and "Mythbusters". If you have never seen them, I strongly recommend that you view editions of them. But I have started to question their reliability. A past edition of "Mythbusters" (entitled "Bullets Fired Up") demonstrated that a bullet fired, well, straight up, would not come down with sufficient velocity to cause injury. Any object falling from a great distance would not accelerate indefinitely (due to gravity) but would reach a terminal velocity due to air resistance. Even a penny dropped from the top of the Empire State Building would not cause harm. Then, we had QI, which tells us, admittedly with no justification or proof that a bullet fired up would come down and kill the firer. To be fair, Stephen Fry of QI, did reiterate a finding of Mythbusters', that it would be impossible for a bullet to go up and come straight back down on the same trajectory. A fascinating edition of Mythbusters explored the myth of the supposed survival of the Alactraz escapers from June 1962. The two main protagnists of the show plus a third man paddled a makeshift rubber raft from the prison to the mainland, thereby confirming that escape was possible. But another show, part of the "The True Story" series contradicted this finding. So, who do we believe? The Mythbusters analysed the remnant of the original escaper's raft and paddled and fashioned replicas that were as close to the ones used in 1962 as possible. Based on FBI original notes, they devised a triangular shaped raft, with a bottom made of rubber. The "True Story" chose to create a pontoon that looked like a huge inflatable sausage instead. The Mythbusters raft, if a version of it was used four decades ago, would have had to be inflated on the roof of the prison, or on the shore of the island. The conditions for the Mythbusters "escape" was 'similar' to the ones in 1962, and the threesome performed their stunt at night. It is difficult to see in the show, but the Mythbusters did not start their journey from the rocky shoreline, which could conceivably have damaged their frail craft. The heroes of the show decided that the three escapers would have known of the strong westward current and would have paddled not to Angel Island, but the more distant Marin Headlands, assisted by the strong drift heading from Alcatraz to the Golden Gate Bridge. They succeeded in their attempt with a few caveats. They had to bail out their vessel and reinflate portions of it every 10 minutes. Were it not for the helpful illumation provided by a support motor launch, would they have known of the deteriorating state of the raft? Then we have "The True Story" team, who noted that the craggy shoreline would harm their craft. The three of them, including two (?) coastguards decided to attempt their crossing in daylight, to go direct to Angel Island. Their first attempt to mount the inflatable sausage resulted in a capsize, so they decided to grasp their flimsy construction and paddle to shore, like Brody and Hooper at the end of Jaws. Their attempt was unsuccessful. So, which version is 'correct'? Which is closer to the 'truth'? Who knows, none of us were there to see the escape attempt, but I find myself drawn to the laconic conclusion of the sadistic governer played by the late Patrick McGoohan in the film "Escape from Alcatraz": "they [the trio of would-be escapers] drowned." To return to QI, they have on occasion got their facts wrong. They stated, for instance, that the Titanic's crew members pay stopped the moment the water closed over the rudder. Not true. As James Witter's pay receipt, they were paid for the whole day of the 15th April 1912, another 21 hours and 20 minutes after their ship had gone to the bottom. Such a show that purports to be authoritative should be more careful!

| Subject: Poor Ol' Tommy | ||
| Who would have thought that the sinking of an old ocean liner
nearly 100 years ago could create such animosity?
As regular readers of this board will know, I have a particular interest in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. This started out as a fasincation when the wreck was found in 1985. It has since escalated into something of an obsession and seems likely to become overwhelming, a situation I do not desire. It has also become unpleasant in recent years. Do a search for "Titanic" on this page and you will see why. A particularly unpleasant development emerged last year. Sit back and I'll tell you... Like it or loathe it, Encyclopedia Titanica (ET) is the on-line source for all things Titanic. It has a consierable database of passengers, crew, technical details, newspaper clippings and a forum. Enter Thomas McCluskie, MBE, who worked for many years in Belfast at Harland and Wolff, the company that made the Titanic. Tommy served as head of technical services (a euphemism for archives) and was happy to help with enquiries about their most famous, and ill-fated, ship; he helped Bruce Beveridge et al. with enquiries relating to their debunking of the bizarre Robin Gardiner "Titanic Switch theory"; he assisted with the UK Government's re-appraissal of evidence relating to the steamship Californian and its involvement in the disaster; and he helped with the filming of James Cameron's 1997 film. While preparing two books on the Titanic (viz."Anatomy of the Titanic" and ""Titanic" and Her Sisters "Olympic" and "Britannic"") and a poster ("Wallchart of the "Titanic""), Tommy suffered a debilitating stroke. This occurred at the same time as a downsizing at Harland and Wolff and Tommy was made redundant (various dates for Tommy's departure are April 1998 or September 1997 depending on whether you read his facebook or linkedin pages). Tommy recovered and was made an MBE for services to the maritime industry in 2004. Nothing scandalous there? In 2004, ET published unsubstantiated allegations that Tommy had misappropriated ("stolen" in common parlance) various documents to fund his retirement. This was swiftly deleted from the forum, Tommy complained, an apology was issued and this seemed to be the end of the matter. The rumours seemed to have no basis in fact. We now move forward to the summer of 2009. Tommy had evidently decided that he had been horribly libelled and decided to instigate legal proceedings against ET. There then followed much legal joustings and back and forth debating between the various legal representatives, leaving Phil Hind (the proprietor of ET) with a bill running into 4 figures. By the end of the year he was appealing for financial help on the forum and people responded with kindness. It seems that Phil then closed many accounts on ET until a subscription fee was paid; this author, with 6 years of history on the board and over 2000 posts, was one of those "banned" and many abandoned ET altogether. Until then, the board was free, and of course, Phil is free to do what he wanted; server space is not cheap and to host it for free was a great altruistic gesture to Titanic and ocean liner research. Why inhibit something that many hundreds of people used? This can be demonstrated in the following graph very easily. The earliest indication of "subscription only" was in June as far as I can determine. From the end of 2009, the daily posting rate had diminished noticeably and many regular posters have not returned.
What on earth has been going on? There are only two reasons for Tommy's attack on ET: since an apology has been given and accepted, this cannot be the reason. The two reasons are: he either wants to destroy ET, and/or is after money. Why wait nearly 5 years to commence legal action? Tommy is out of time though on this point; the UK Statute of Limitations is 1 year. Why now? There have been rumours that Tommy has been bankrolled by the Kamudas of the Titanic Historical Society (THS) to destroy ET. I can find no evidence for or against this theory. But another THS member may provide a hint: Tim Trower has been gloating on Facebook about the imminent demise of ET, and described Tommy's case against Phil Hind as "excellent." Trower was banned from ET in late 2008 when he insulted the well received books "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" and its authors. He has been glowing with indignation since then and admitted to this author that he wanted ET shut down. He set up the THS message board shortly afterwards which has been dismally underused (1 or 2 posts a day on average), and has been trying to divert people on the Titanic-Titanic message board to his THS creation by reminding people incessantly, "Ken Marschall posts exclusively [there]" ... that the THS board is free...and that you can even remonstrate with Titanic day-dreamer Douglas Faulkner Woolley on the board...etc....etc....etc.... Tommy certainly has a place in the heart of the THs and is regarded as a hero; he worked at the shipyard where the ship was built for starters, and his book "No place for a boy" is trumpeted as an essential item in any Titanic enthusiast's collection. The book even has a huge advert on the THS website. In return, Tommy has said, "[Karen] & Ed are two of the most honest people I have ever had the privilege to know which makes your opinion so valuable" when those of us who know anything of the workings of the THS regard them as two utterly repellant individuals. What of Tommy's books? In Titanic circles, his efforts are universally dismissed as trash; nice eye candy, but with few redeeming features. There are errors in the text and picture captions which are surprising for someone who worked in the archives of Harland and Wolff. Tommy told me that the books were prepared when he was ill and someone else partially wrote them, disregarding his instructions to remove his name from the covers...or perhaps, as he told someone else, "the pictures in his books were assembled and labeled by the archive department while he was in the hospital but that the book text was all written by him"....or, as he now says in the safe harbour that is the THS message board, the most disputed areas of the text were accurate after all! So, which is it, Tommy? On some other forums, Tommy has been taken to task for misidentifying pictures that any Titanic enthusiast would be able to spot in seconds. He apparently became indignant, abusive and angry when his errors were pointed out. Some other points about Tommy and his memory, which may have been affected following his stroke. In some documentaries of later years (in relation to the "missing pieces" or "Achilles heel" of the Titanic), Tommy has lent his voice to several highly controversial aspects of the Titanic. He says that the Olympic, the Titanic's sister, suffered from an effect called "panting" during its sea trials, where the side plates of the ship would flex back and forth by a small amount. The key to solving this was fixing thin metal plates to the superstructure. Tommy claims to have seen internal memos at Harland and Wolff referring to this problem. Not only have naval architects dismissed this notion, but not one single piece of evidence has been provided to support this claim. And if "panting" was alleviated by the addition of these thin plates, why was not the Olympic retro-fitted? And, a friend who is an authority on these vessels, says that the problem should have been noticed in files held by the UK National Archives. They aren't. The "panting" problem is also missing from "Wee Man" Tommy's 1990s Titanic books. Of course, all ships "pant" but the way Tommy describes it, it makes it sound as if the Olympic was unseaworthy. And then Tommy makes other mistakes, such as his assertion that Titanic's younger sister was originally called "Gigantic" but this name has been crossed out and the name "Britannic" written in in the Harland and Wolff order book. A researcher who has seen this states that this is untrue and he has pictures to prove this. During the making of the documentaries, Tommy was shown reviewing footage of a dive to the wreck, in particular, double bottom fragments shorn from the hull during the break-up and descent to the ocean floor 2 1/2 miles down. With a camera literally in Tommy's face, he siezes his opportunity to provide a soundbite that will guarantee his piece is not consigned to the floor of the cutting room. He tells us that was he is seeing is the "most significant" piece of Titanic footage he has ever seen. I find this disingenuous; what about footage showing the forces that broke the engines apart? The iceberg damage? For this reason, this author has labelled Tommy as "rent-a-gob." He'll tell you what you want to hear. On the Titanic-Titanic forum, I mentioned that "I had no time for the man" and Tommy replied with a venomous email. I am not the only one to have received such messages; two other people have been on the receiving side of Tommy's litigious streak; there may be others. In his message to me, Tommy gloats that he has a reputation in Titanic circles unlike myself, but he has certainly destroyed whatever good feelings people may have had towards him by his actions. On ET, one gentleman even described Ol'Tommy as a "parasite" and this is partially true. A parasite cohabits with an organism to the detriment of its host. If one considers the "host" to be the Titanic herself, this is indeed accurate of this odious owl-face. One last point: in 2007, this author was attempting to contact McCluskie and one organisation that I emailed was the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology. They couldn't help, but simply told me that Tommy's membership was "revoked." I wonder why?

| Sir Terry Pratchett has entered the assisted suicide debate because of the progression
of Alzheimer's disease in his brain.
Sir Terry now supports Alzheimer's research, in much the same way as Michael J.Fox supports work done on Parkinson's and the late Christopher Reeve supported spinal injuries. Is it just me or these people not supporting these charities through a sense of duty, or that their presence will help to raise funds, but simply because they want a cure, to help themselves? After all, if these people had never been afflicted I doubt they would have given a second chance towards helping these charities. From Pratchett's Wikipedia page: "In March 2008 Pratchett announced he was donating one million US dollars (about £494,000 at the time) to the Alzheimer's Research Trust, ... and that he was shocked "to find out that funding for Alzheimer's research is just 3% of that to find cancer cures." Of his donation Mr. Pratchett said: "I am, along with many others, scrabbling to stay ahead long enough to be there when the Cure comes along.” Pratchett's donation inspired an internet campaign where fans hope to 'Match it for Pratchett', by raising another $1 million." So we have his admissions that he wants to stay alive, and there is a tacit
implication that his money will help to find a cure, and thus save his life.

Of course it has, and it shows that homeopathy doesn't work. Its all an expensive con foisted on the public and lapped up the gullible who will dismiss science. Such people such live in a cave and be forced to surrender everything that science has provided for them, if they don't believe in it.

| Subject: More woes for the THS | ||
| After my last article, things go from bad to worse for the Titanic Historical Society (THS)...
[My notes are in square brackets; the author of the piece below is not a native English speaker,
although I think he has done well :-) ]
i was involved in the 1996 and 1998 recovery expeditions. back then, there was very little acceptance of tulloch & co [the salvagers], so i wrote in 1996 an article why i am involved. in it i mentioned also how unlogic[al] the arguments of the critics are, like the ths being proud of owning coal recovered from the britannic [the Titanic's younger sister ship, sunk in World War 1 by a mine] but titanic coal is such a bad thing, and how they destroy[ed] some pieces in the ths collection just to have some give aways for their supporters (pulling off pieces of the carpet [fragment], lifejacket etc that "fell off". i just pointed out a few points. then i was kicked out without a reason being given (which is to my knowledge illegal in a non-profit organisation). all i received were letters by karen [Kamuda, wife of the THS "founder" Ed] (several people confirmed me that the wording is definitely from karen, including typical mistakes that i would not spot, being a native german speaker), sent under an alias. in order to receive my money back i was ordered to send money for the postage, which i did not send. so they keep my money since 1997. in fact paul lowden-brown keeps the money, he "took over" the case as european representative. by coincident i was a few years later in london at the science museum exhibition when i noted a sign about a public discussion about the artifacts that very afternoon by experts. of course i was curious to learn who these experts were - and one of them was of course plb [Paul Louden-Brown]... he started to talk how the whole ths agree that things should be left at the wreck site etc... i tried to keep my mouth shut, but after a few lies i could not resist. i confronted him with the only survey that ths did in this matter in 1986, that showed [approximately] 50% like to see artifacts, and that their president wanted to raise a piece of steel to melt commerative coins etc, all things that the commutator printed a while ago. but the society, which against law never has a member meeting and never present their figures kicks out people that do not share the trustees view. PLB tried to make me like a little fool by saying this is all a lie, and that ths never kicked someone out. this was of course to much, and i accused him of being involved in kicking me out, and that he even has stolen my money a few years back...
[The "poll" was actually based on information based on information gathered from
letters and phone calls to the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution, the co-founders of the wreck.]
after the discussion he came to me, almost hitting me with his stick, how dare could i accuse him about all this. he then admitted, that he had "heard" my name before, and will investigate what my case is. he promised that all must have been a mistake and he will contact me. he never did. all the above can be proved by witnesses and with letters etc. this is just my story, and there are many more of others. [NB: the "you" in this next section refers to another person who had problems with the THS including ordering items from their shop. His wife had tried to order Christmas presents for her husband from them: "Not only did we not get the presents, but they mishandled my credit card info. When I emailed them about it, they got rude very quick. I don't think asking to make sure my info is secure is unreasonable, but apparently Karen thinks it is."] since you had troubles with the shop, well, this is such a sad chapter as well. over the years i lost hundreds of dollars by ordering stuff, being overcharged with postage. it all goes into their pockets. i remember a case when i was charged 120 dollars for postage (they rip off people out of the usa) and when the item arrived only some 25 dollars were on the parcel. i asked if the rest is credited on my account, a question that was ignored and with the next order it began again at zero... so since more that 12 years they gave me all the rights to call them liars and thiefs, because they are and i can prove [it] easy :-)

| Subject: No moon, no Mars | ||
| It looks like President Obama has cancelled the Orion/Ares/Constellation programmes to take NASA back to the Moon and beyond. Whether he will get this past Congress is another matter. I am in two minds about this; it saves a lot of money at a time when America and the world needs it, but to throw away billions of dollars in spent research and development seems shortsighted. Now Obama wants to focus on remote sensing (satellites to analyse global warming etc.). And what of America's manned presence in space? Well, there doesn't seem to have a reprieve for the Space Shuttle, but he wants to keep the space station going past 2020. So America will have to buy space aboard Russian Soyuz capsules. That is, if they can get space (pardon the pun). Russians may have their own priorities, like putting their own cosmonauts and European spacemen/women in orbit. NASA may not get a rocket when they want it. And just think of the job losses at NASA and its contractors. I don't think they'll be voting for Obama in 2012. | ||

| Yes, we're a little backwards in this country and have just seen the season premiere of
the new "Ghost Hunters" which partially featured an investigation at the Betsy Ross house
in Philadelphia. An interesting portion featured voices coming from the attic, which
was padlocked and inaccessible. To this viewer, the voice had a mechanical ring to it,
like a recording. So what did Grant and Jason do when they performed their reveal
of the evidence? Did they ask to see the attic, to check if there was any source
of bogus data there? No.
And, in the preceeding investigation segment, the dynamic duo picked up a so-called EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena). My wife and I could barely make it out, just a dull grumbling above background, barely audible and certainly not discernible as words. So how on earth did they manage to decipher the voices? I think there is a fair amount of wishful thinking and the old "seeing faces in the clouds" type effect, called Pareidolia to its friends. In summary, a hardly wonderful opening installment. | Now, I don't have much of an interest in Bigfoot/Sasquatch, but I am impressed by the National Geographic
Channel's "Mystery 360" installment on this enigma. It features an impressive 1st generation copy of the Patteron-Gimlin film which
purports to show one of the creatures loping off into the jungle.
Its all so much different from that bloody awful series "The X Creatures" hosted by Chris Packham on the BBC in 1999 when he, as a zoologist attempted to explain or explain away unknown animals, like the Yeti, Nessie etc.. He contacted Robert Gimlin and asked him about his fellow Bigfoot hunter, Roger Patterson who had died decades earlier. Gimlin was pestered by Packham and admitted that Roger could have been behind a possible fraud. Taking this as a definite admission of fraud, Packham concluded that the Bigfoot legend was a sham. Forgive my obvious ignorance, but how does one proceed down this path of torturous logic? Twat.

| It seems that the US have unilaterally decided to deorbit the Internation Space Station (ISS)
in 2016, seemingly regardless of what their partners (Europe, Canada and Japan) want. Admittedly the US
is the major backers, but don't the opinions of the others count for anything? We know that the US wants the newest, the biggest and the best,
but to order the destruction of this $100 billion facility just 5 years after the last component was delivered, 18 years after the first element
was sent aloft, and a collosal 32 years after President Reagan's directive for NASA to build a space station "...and to do it within as decade" (seems that with
the inevitable budget and design wrangling that followed, Reagan's order didn't have the same imperative that
President Kennedy's 'race to the moon' initiative had).
Now the European Space Agency's chief has pleaded to keep the ISS going past 2015. His arguments make a good deal of sense. For, if the US is allowed to get away with this, then it can't help but impact on future space missions involving international co-operation.

| Subject: Nazi Twin Mystery | ||
| I saw a re-run of this fascinating documentary on the National Geographic channel tonight. Basically put, its thesis
is that Joseph Mengele, after his escape from Auschwitz, fled to Brazil and, posing as a doctor, performed chemical manipulations on women
that resulted - and still results in a disproportionate number of twins in a small town. Twins were apparently Mengele's field of interest.
Although the idea that Mengel was behind the twin 'explosion' was debunked, the documentary led to worrying revelations. I had known that South American countries provided a safe harbour for Nazi War Criminals, but now we have the information that the Brazilian police force not only knew where Mengele was, but were keeping track of him! Why then was he not extradited to face trial? How was Brazil admitted to the United Nations while it knowingly harboured this despicable creature? A similar situation existed in Argentina, under the protective Peron regime. Adolf Eichmann was forcible extradited when diplomatic moves failed. And that country was also allowed into the U.N too! Given that Eire, declared neutral in World War 2 (despite a small Nazi following if the documentaries are to be believed) was forbidden entry into the UN until 1955 because of its desire to stay out of the Allies-Axis confilct, the decision to allow Nazi saviours Brazil and Argentina into the UN is inexplicable. In an ideal world, any country that still has members of its ruling base still in power who supported Naziism should be ostracised and held to account. 65 years on since World War 2, this seems unlikely, but those who turned a blind eye to the elderly Nazis in their frail dotage (bless!) should be "held to account."

suspiciously, the email advised that I needed to pay a user manual for £10, which I could get by paying money to
her PayPal account.
This sounds like a perfectly dishonest scam, and I wonder how many people paid £10 never to hear from her again? I emailed her a few times at the hotmail address and never got a reply, thus reinforcing my suspicions. Caveat Emptor!

Here's a way to do a Davina impression: Talk to someone and pretend the TV camera is just behind your shoulder. While talking to the person, slowly rotate your body to face the camera, all the time opening your eyes until they pop open wide, while slowing your voice and raising the volume. By the time you face the "camera" you should have wide open eyes, a loud shrill voice and be talking very slowly and patronisingly. And if you can hunch your shoulders so that your face juts out at the camera, so much the better while you yell at your audience, great. There is a terrible lack of synchronicity between the images and the sound. One guy hammers a nail into a door, and a second later comes the accompanying sound. Still, its better than the version of the 1950's "The House of Haunted Hill" where a section was cut out, presumably by the censors. Towards the end of the film, there was a lag of a few seconds between the speech and the action! (And not to mention that the Unexplained Channel shows the worst possibly copies of films, often with faded colour, motion blur and a lack of definition that makes me think that the source looks like it has come from someone's 20 year old VHS tape which has been left out in the sun).

Sprite was the first guinea pig I ever handled, in February 2007. She was tiny then but became a bit of a fat, lazy slob over time and thought of herself as the alpha female. She loved nothing more than to cuddle in her daddy's arms and be stroked where I was met with delirious and loud happy cooing noises. She got a bit grumpy in her old age, growling whenever she was taken out of her cage, and pulling the hairs out of my arms. Which hurt. A lot! | Subject: The Jihad against the Space Shuttle
| 2010, and the New Year marks many things to many people. For some, it is a fresh
start, with fresh resolutions. For many it marks endings. And the final flight of the Space Shuttle
is one of them.
The mission designated STS-133, currently scheduled for September 16th, will be the last of this remarkable machine. A "stay of execution" seems unlikely given that the production facility for the Shuttle's External Tank (thats the big orange bullet shaped thing) has already been closed down. And what do we have to replace it? Not a winged vehicle, but a capsule. Yes, a return to the Mercury-Gemini-Apollo era used "tried and trusted technology" developed in the 1960s. Evidently, the Constellation programme (the umbrella term used to describe the Orion and Ares launch vehicles) is a rejection of ground-breaking design, and I feel that the shuttle concept has been dismissed unfairly as a bad idea, best relegated to history, or "a jihad" against the shuttle as one NASA administrator puts it. The logical way to proceed with manned space missions was; to proceed to low earth orbit, create a space platform as a jumping off point for deep space missions, and then missions to the moon and mars. But President Kennedy's jingoism forced a rush for the moon to beat the Soviets. Then Nixon, who was not a space fan, decided to reduce the costs of launches by deciding on a reusable launch vehicle. And therein lay the problem: political meddling forced the abandoning of a completely reusable (and prohibitively expensive) vehicle into a mostly reusable system that would have to glide back to a landing (a 100 ton glider with relatively poor aerodynamics!), it had to have a 60 foot long cargo bay for military payloads; it had to fly once a week every week, it had to pay for itself, by carrying 25 tons of cargo every launch. Oh and it had to use solid fuel rockets which had never been used on manned missions except for escape rockets. Oh, and the concept of "escape"? Well, of course, the risk could be mitigated by making it failsafe, the most reliable machine ever built. The concept of crew escape was dispensed with. Its easy to look back at the flawed decisions that were made. After all, unsinkable ships do sink, fireproof buildings do burn down...and failure proof spacecraft can and do fail. Put all that into a blender and add a dash of managerial and political bickering, and the failure becomes evident as a consequence of the project's genesis. NASA, up till then a scientific agency, had to tout for business on the market place for commercial satellites to launch. And an impossibly optimistic launch schedule meant that the launches had to be heavily subsidised. And then the media began twisting the blade whenever there were launch failures or postponements. No it wasn't until the Challlenger disaster that most of this shuttle bashing emerged. It certainly shocked many, myself included. Nigel Macknight, editor of the now defunct Spaceflight News, refused to mention any of the shortcomings in his breathless reporting of the Shuttle programme. But let us look at what we have got as opposed to what we may have. A reliable, if somewhat workhorse, having completed well over 100 missions. It spawned many imitators - Britain's HOTOL, ESA's Hermes, Germany's Sanger, the USA Transcontinental Orient Express, and the Russian Shuttle programme, all of which were abandoned after Challenger. Only the Russian Shuttle flew - once. Constellation/Areas/Orion is over budget, under powered and overweight. Some confusion existed as to whether it would survive the post-Obama transition. It represents a by-gone era but it is now more expedient to think of a space station-moon-mars directive rather than "mistaken" adherence to a space shuttle only programme. To put all their eggs in the Constellation programme would be reminiscent of the space shuttle's early days when all the eggs were placed in its basket. Then Challenger, and many payloads couldn't be launched while the fleet was grounded. Accidents with other US rockets (the Titan and Delta shortly afterwards) practically decimated the US's space plans for many months. And then theres the scheduling problem. The shuttle was due to launch in 1977/8 originally. It didn't do so until 1981. From 1975 until 1981, no Americans were placed in orbit. Areas is due for a manned launch in 2915. What if it is delayed? When will the US put its citizens in space again? Oh yes, there are spaces aboard Russian Soyuz capsules, but I cannot help but feel that the US-Russian alliance is precarious. One has only to recall the stand-off during the Yugoslavian conflict, or what if there is another Litvinenko scandal? Would America try to man-rate is Titan, Delta, or another country's launch vehicles? Doubtful. So at a time of exciting change, it seems that the last thing that is needed is a change in the status quo. Keep the shuttle flying, until its retrograde-step replacement comes along. For, who knows when we will see the next generation of winged shuttle type vehicles emerge...

Now, Molony doesn't deny that 1500 people died, but his writings have become

good, but his later rantings ("Victims and Villains," "Titanic and the Mystery Ship" and now "Trial of the Mount Temple")
are works that no Titanic scholar should have on their shelves. Or, if do, turn the spine to the wall to spare your shame when

As I have demonstrated very well in this article,

This is bullshit. Why not just perform fox genocide in a less ostentatious manner with guns, traps or poison? The reason: the toffs want to see the blood of a poor animal dripping from the fangs of their beagles, oh the pleasure of the smell of blood in the nostrils, the adrenalin of the chase. I'm sure the exhausted fox sees it that way too. Foxes do what foxes have not for centuries; kill to eat. To think the fox makes a mess out of chickens and their coups simply out of spite or pleasure is nonsense. And why don't humans make coups or enclosures stronger and fox proof? The notion that foxes need to be culled to control their population is rubbish too. The way the pro-hunt faction speaks, you'd think that foxes overrun the countryside and that the "toffs" own the land and how dare foxes creep around on my property? Well, tough, foxes don't obey land boundaries and kill for food. "But," say the hunters, "if fox hunting was outlawed (which it is), thousands would lose their jobs, hounds would have to be put to sleep etc." I am sure that humans are not employed just to keep the hunt going. Don't they have anything better to do, like waving pitchforks at townsfolk who wander onto their property, yelling 'get orf moi land.' Apparently not, the lure of blood means that it is a full time job. Wny don't they join the army in that case. Plenty of people to kill overseas. And isn't it a bit morally barren to breed and train animals simply to tear to shreds an exhausted fox (dozens of hounds for one fox - what great odds!)? If you think thats OK, then perhaps we should support badger baiting, and dog fighting. "You don't understand us," wail the hunt supporters. Well, you can support your indefensible lifestyle if you want. I don't WANT to understand.

She has never warmed to my wife probably because my girl doesn't conform to my mum's expectations of perfection. We haven't spoken since I announced the date of our wedding in May 2007, so her tales of "we have nothing against Carly - we don't know her" is a barefaced lie. And then turning the handle by my dad asking why should they keep me in their will and that my mum was going to give me £20,000 for a deposit on a house if me and my mum were still talking is truly horrendous. I feel a great emptiness inside and coping with it is getting harder and harder.

| Those of us in the UK probably gloated at how Simon Cowell's domination of the
Christmas popular music with glorified karaoke sung by manufactured nobodies has
been repelled. Who wants to hear yet another ballad when we want festive Christmassy jingles?
Just when it looked like Cowell's plan had utterly failed, the No.1 went to a musical rant, not nice
sleigh bells, children singing etc. Still, a necessary start. And at least a portion of the money
goes to charity NOT in smug Cowell's pocket to fund his speedboat lifestyle.
Still, at least the public have voted with their pocket this time and given us what we want. Before the X-Factor, Pop Idol, and Pop Idol:The Rivals, there was no guarantee who would be no.1 at Yuletide and that was part of the fun. Remember when Bob the Builder and Mad World galloped to the top, effectively putting a digitus impudicus up to the pop industry. And when the pop industry didn't get its own way, didn't we know?! Recall when Pete Waterman tried to have Michelle McManus booted off Pop Idol because she wasn't pop material due to her size? Questions were asked in Parliament about this and the judges backed down. Until the final, when Pete couldn't quite bring himself to praise Michelle's effort and said "the public love you." When she won, Pete was nowhere to be seen. "A toilet break" perennical hosts Ant and Dec told us. Yes, OK, if thats what you want to be believe. More likely, Waterman stormed off because his sizist attitude hadn't won. And Waterman hasn't been seen on terrestrial in the intervening few years. Good riddance. And in another blow to the phone vote TV shows, we get Heather Mills in January's "Dancing on Ice." Yes, the world's most famous ex-whore, bunny boiler, money grabber, liar etc. is now putting her best foot (sorry only foot) forward to win the public's vote. What the HELL are ITV thinking of? She must be one of the most hated creatures in creation. It'll be interesting to see how this affects the ratings. Hopefully they will be dismally low before she gets the boot (only one mind you), which will hopefully be soon. If Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby had any morals they would refuse to host a show with such an odious discharge of rectal dribblings participating.

The following day, Reeder opened up a fresh Paypal dispute saying that the item hadn't arrived. The payment was suspended and now Paypal has decided in favour of Russell. Now Russell may be a typical Yankee Yokel who didn't know that I lived in England and thought that items would get to him in the blink of an eye. Or more likely he had no intention of paying for the item and decided to get his money back before the item arrived so he didn't have to spend any money. I favour this latter option. Maybe my book didn't arrive. What is suspicious is that Reeder did not reply to our emails that I sent to him asking him if the book arrived. Sounds like a thief to me.

| ...or God and Jesus Christ as they are often called.
At this time of year its traditional for one's thoughts to turn to the reasons for Christmas, the nativity, the three wise men, the shepherds, etc., no? No. At this time of year its an excuse for gorging on chocolates and rich food, washing the whole lot down with lashings of alcohol before enduring a copious evacuation of the stomach contents shortly afterwards. But let us talk about Jesus for a second. And before you all reach for the "back" button on your browser, hear me out. The God of the Old Testament was a vengeful, spiteful piece of work, often smiting people for no good reason. He then has a son (and commits adultery but lets not go into that even though it never went to court), and seems to become more lenient towards His creations. His son eventually gets flogged and then nailed to a few pieces of MDF before expiring. And what does God do? A bit of theatrics; thunder and lightning. If it was my son who had been paraded in such a humiliating fashion I would have gone bloody beserk, extreme devastation with the lightning bolts, plagues and so on! But no, nothing much. Did God not care? I was perplexed by this problem after a friend's dad tried to force feed his evangelical views at the tender age of 10. "Christ died for our sins." Did he? The explanation given didn't satisfy me at that age but then again I can't recall what he said. Yes, I am a cynic who demands some form of proof before I believe in make-believe and hocus-pocus. Is that too much to ask? My mum had proof of some form and she still doesn't believe: seconds after leaving a church following a swearing incident, she was hit in the chest by a cricket ball. Just one tiny crumb of proof, please?

| While watching "The Exorcist" just now on the Television, I was reminded -and astounded

everything that was deemed to be controversial or vulgar had the axe fall upon it. With his
passing, more liberal attitudes have prevailed. We have had "Last House on the Left"
"Straw Dogs" and the first "Evil Dead" released, and even hard core pornography given the

Ferman's legacy is that of a bigot with an intolerant attitude to the gory, the violent and the controversial, and is now thankfully gone; as a film buff, I don't miss him. | Subject: The Iraq war
| I see the Iraq war is back in the headlines with the DPP denouncing Tony Blair's
disingenuous description of the genesis of the war.
When I worked at BAE Systems, we had ample opportunity to debate the many facets of the conflict and two things emerged which I don't believe have ever been mentioned before. The first is Tony's immediate "friendship" with Dubya after 9/11. For those of us who avidly followed the news, it was clear that there wasn't the rapport between Bush Jr. and Blair, compared to Clinton and Blair. Indeed, hadn't Bush even described Mexico as the US's most important ally between this inauguration and September 11th? Within BAE, we debated how Blair saw the WTC and Pentagon attacks to wheedle into Bush's good books and rekindle the "special relationship". The details are lost now, but I remember being impressed by this reason. This air of sycophancy migrates into the second point of debate we had; the reason for the Iraq war. Everyone from Michael Moore to ...well, nearly everyone expound the theory that oil, and commercial opportunities available to Bush and his cronies was the driving reason. Really, do you think ex-President George W. Bush was intelligent enough to engineer just a scheme? I think the real reason is this: Bush Jnr. wanted to trump daddy by doing something Bush Snr. didn't do in 1991 - get rid of Saddam Hussein. And of course, Phony Tony was there to provide troops in abundance for a war that was very dubious.

A few nights ago, I was watching the "Ghost Hunters International" investigation of 'Frankenstein's Castle' and a German speaking guide, who spoke near perfect English, was subjected to subtitling. My wife and I found that we could understand nearly every word. A few episodes later, a lady from New Zealand found herself subjected to the invasive titling! I have seen this done a few times, on programmes such as "Cities of the Underworld," but mainly on more US than UK shows - one American programme even felt the need to prompt the audience what Glaswegian speakers were saying, for God's sake. I am sure it would not be tolerated the other way round. A subtitled speaker from the American "deep south" perhaps?

| Seems that Tim Trower didn't like my expose of his chums in the Titanic Hysterical Society
and has spitefully tried to caused trouble. Confirms my suspicions about him and
his brown-nosing. He has yet to answer any of the allegations below such as why was I banned for such a minor issue? But lest we forget this is not the first time Trower has been a sycophantic toady towards his THS chums in Springfield. His leash-holder, Karen Kamda demanded a bad review of "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" and Trower was happy to oblige. Everyone else lauded the books as definitive, but the THS wanted to give a bad review, and I have heard that this is because the THS hated the authors of "The Ship...." Then there is the rival society, Titanic International; Tim disparagingly calls their journal "Voyage To Nowhere," a play on its title "Voyage." This dismissive name is not justified. Then there is the issue of the Edith Corse Evans photo. Trower bleated about its unauthorised, and doctored usage in a recent copy of "Voyage" but its legality was checked; both Evans and the original photographer are dead (Evans died on the Titanic in 1912), and it is out of copyright. The photo has been modified sufficiently that it counts as a new picture and has copyright applicable to the person who composited it.
And if Trower wants to blub about apologies to people I have wronged, let us look no further than himself. He referred to, and even had a webpage, detailing the "TIT" - the Titanic International Triumvirate, and showing a lactating nipple. Tim chortled at this insult, but it greatly offended the Triumvirate: Michael Poirer, Jim Kalafus and Shelley Dziedzic. Why would Trower embark on such juvenile behaviour? What had these three done to him? As far as I can gather, nothing. Except of course that they are dedicated, loyal officers of a society that is rival to his own beloved Titanic Historical Society.

| 13:13:51 | ||
| Subject: Douglas Faulkner Woolley | ||
| Once again Douglas Faulkner Woolley is in the news. This self-serving egocentric
has been claiming ownership rights of the wreck of the Titanic for decades and,
thankfully, most people ignore his bizarre claims. But he has an unfortunate
way of returning in an unwelcome fashion occasionally, like a stifled burp that
stubbornly won't respond to antacid.
Mr. Faulkner-Woolley insists that because he bought the "last" share of the White Star Line he owns the rights to salvage the Titanic. This is pure bunkum; if it were, then why did have there been no other cases of retrospective claims over other companies that have become defunct? Why has Mr.Faulkner-Woolleey not claimed ownership of other White Star Line wrecks, such as the Britannic, or the Republic, and her cargo of gold? The answer is obvious: none of these other wrecks are as "sexy" as the Titanic ... or loaded with the same publicity that Mr.Doug craves. Woolley hopes to raise funds from the sale of his own book "Titanic - One Man's Dream" to finance the salvage effort of the fabled liner. But it has to be the worst Titanic book I have read, full of newspaper clippings poorly reproduced and slap-dash text inserted seemingly at random. Avoid. What really irks me about Mr.Doug is the way he has hijacked my own research to cement his own claims that he "owns" the Titanic (and there is photo of him in a society magazine, looking pensive over a model of the ship, while above, the caption screams 'Father of the Titanic'). For years I have been researching the possibility that the Royal Navy found the Titanic while on a secret sonar mapping project. This would be at the tail end of the 1970s. This project has usually been called "The Sollis Project," but the commander of the mission, who confirms that a wreck was found in the area of the Titanic, doesn't recall this name. Woolley would have us believe that the Royal Navy allowed one of its own vessels to be chartered by his company, and that the Titanic was found, but kept secret from him! I didn't know the RN allowed civiallians access to their vessels! Could I charter a battlecruiser to take pot-shots at a few people please? The story is obviously false and only came to surface once my own research was made public. The name "Sollis" is a red-herring but Wally still uses it. A mate of Wally, Robert McDougall, has written a report on Sollis, and I wish I had kept a copy. Not only does it "confirm" Wally's ownership of the Titanic, but it also insists that the RN attempted to find the log book of the Titanic as it would reveal her connection, or proximity, to pre-WW1 German activities. Littered about this fantasy are references to my own work, which I find disrespectful as I feel that it attempts to legitmise his own bogus story. I kept getting illegible letters from Woolly for many years and I ensured he didn't get my home address when I moved. What really sums up the whole story is on Woolley's home page here; here, and in his both, he dreams of raising first, the wreck of the Queen Elizabeth, restoring her and then doing the same to the Titanic. Little problem, though: the QE, after being gutted by fire in Hong Kong harbour in the early 1970s, was left as a burnt out hulk for many years. She was eventually scrapped, with parts being used to help build the bridge that connects Hong Kong with their new airport. Allegedly, sections of the keel still reside on the sea floor as they proved to be too difficult to remove. So, there is nothing left of the QE. And Woolley wants to "raise" and "restore" her. And he's looking for investors. Good luck! Now I have a farm that raises flying porcine creatures if anyone wants to invest some cash.

| Subject: The Titanic Hysterical Society | ||
| In April, I was subjected to a ban by the Titanic Historical Society (THS).
The reason for the ban was so petty as to stun the mind.
My "crime"? For daring to remind the THS that President Ed S. Kamuda is only a co-founder of the THS. Ed has been a Titanic enthusiast since the 1953 Twentieth Century Fox film "Titanic" was released, and ten years later the THS was formed with fellow enthusiasts. Of course, he didn't do this on his own, but you wouldn't know that as each of his contemporaries have been rather Stalin-esqued "air-brushed" out of their history. So, to commemorate the 97th anniversary of the Titanic sinking, we were told on the THS message board that Ed, the "founder" was due to be interviewed on the radio. My first attempt to correct this piece of news was deleted, and when I reposted it, I was banned. THS lacky Tim Trower, an alledged friend of mine, said that my post would be confusing to people who didn't know the history of the THS and said that my mention of Charles Haas as a fellow co-founder was wrong as he had not been in the society since the beginning. A minor point, and hardly worthy of a ban. Of course, those of us who know anything about the THS know that Ed was indeed "only" a co-founder; his wedding photograph, reproduced in the society newsletter 20 years ago even mentions this! But those other people who helped shape the society and who have, for one reason or another, moved on have fallen foul of the revisionist history. And they must be removed. One person is even described by Karen Kamuda, Ed's wife, as having mental difficulties or having gone 'off the rails', a "fact" that is simply not true. The real reason why I was banned is because of Ed and Karen's decision to embargo a review of my book in the Society magazine, resulting in poor sales. This is because my book details an incident that the Society has spent decades suppressing, due to an over-zealous, and now deceased member of a shipping union. Contrary opinions were banned or stifled, and hence my book was ignored. To see how I crossed swords with Karen, look here. The upshot of this is that I have lost a friend. The afore mentioned Tim Trower, lickspittle of the THS, has been trying to drum up support for the THS the message board, even going so far to say that artist Ken Marschall posts "exclusively" there (has he got a binding contract I wonder?) And all this because "his" message board has been largely ignored and has failed to ignite much interest in the Titanic world. Tim has been very heavy handed on people on the board, compensation syndrome for his rantings on Encyclopedia-Titanica which got him banned? Who knows. Ex-THS member Steven B. Anderson was a member of the THS until he got ejected for fraternising with the late George Tulloch, the founder of RMS Titanic, Inc., the company that salvages artefacts from the Titanic's debris. The THS is rabidly anti-salvage. Steven has a few questions for the members of the Titanic Historical Society to answer: How does a life member get thrown out of that society? When was the last election of officers? When was the last treasury report made available to members? When was the last membership business meeting? When was the last non-profit tax return filed? Can a member see a copy of the Non-profit paperwork and the bylaws that govern the Titanic Historical Society? Why do items donated to the society seem to disappear? (Into closets in private homes in Steven's opinion)? Why is credit for items donated to the society and articles written by members that have been banned due to having the wrong opinion get removed? Why is it O.K. to rewrite the history of your society to give all the credit to the last remaining co-founder of the society becuase you banned, pissed off or threw out all the other co-founders? Why is it O.K. to claim publically that various other original co-founders of the society are dead? And the biggest questions of all are: When did the THS collection become the Kamuda Collection as stated in the "Kamudacator" travel journal? Why is it O.K. to bash George Tulloch and RMS Titanic, Inc. for twenty years over the recovery issue, and then take most of the "Kamuda" collection and put it next to recovered items in the Titanic museum in Branson because there now is a "buck" involved. [Paul's note - I am not sure about the last point, given the THS stance on recovered artefacts. But the sentiment is right: the THS website, unlike any other Titanic website, reads like a marketing website for Titanic items, with the emphasis on the commercial aspects of the disaster rather than the sombre.] Talking of anti-salvage, the THS does not mention that in 1990, the late Walter Lord reversed his opinion on the policy of artefact recovery and implored Anheuser and Busch to exhibit artefacts at Sea World, Florida. The request was turned down. And Ken Marschall has occasionally voiced his pro-salvage thoughts. So why have these two people not been ejected from the THS? Well, they are luminaries. And Walter Lord was almost solely responsible in the Titanic frenzy of the last five decades of the twentieth century. It doesn't pay to piss off such luminaries. The "little people" in your society, yes, but not the upper echelons.

her holiday apartment and has never been seen since - at least, not seen by

What rot. They went out, night after night on a piss-up with their mates,
enjoying Tapas abandoning their children, and only occasionally going back
to sleep. This neglect of the children is absent from the media's sycophantic
depiction of the frantic couple, and amazingly, they have not been subjected
to any form of prosecution, even in the Algarve, where such neglect is a criminal offence.
I am also sickened, but in a way that I can't articulate, how so much money (over £1 million so far) on the search for just one little girl. Why don't people feel the desire to contribute to funds that search for other lost children, such as Ben Needham? Is this because Madeleine is a cute, photogenic little girl? And why has so much money been squandered on the futile efforts of detection agencies like Metodo 3 who have taken so much money and produced nothing? | With Hallowe'n tomorrow, I thought I'd share a few thoughts on a certain rogue...
Peter Underwood. A revered name in the annals of psychical research. His books were required reading and have much nurtured much interest in ghost research. But what of the man? My opinions of him have deteriorated so much in the last decade that I now regard him as an attention seeking ignoramus. The epiphany occurred shortly after I joined the Ghost Club. I was told that there had been an exodus of members after Peter Underwood left to form his own group. My ears pricked up this scandal. What happened, I asked. I was told that there was due to be a reshuffle of the upper echelons of the club (I forget why) which was incompatible with Underwood's status as chairman of the club. When things didn't go his way, Underwood threatened to disband the club, with a pompous attitude of "I AM the Ghost Club." When members protested, Underwood left. And took the society's decades of research with him. And a valuable painting that had been bequeathed to the Club. The Ghost Club was now in a seriously depleted state. Underwood reformed "The Ghost Club society", a group which pre-dates the Ghost Club (1855 compared to 1862). The fact that the "Society" hadn't technically been active for over a hundred years means nothing - he proudly trumpeted "his" Society as "The oldest ghost group in the world." However, to be fair the Ghost Club has had periods of inactivity too, so are they legitimate in their claims to be "the oldest" group, too? A few years later, when doubts after Underwood and his own troupe had emerged, those ex-members of the Ghost Club who had left with Underwood came scuttling back. At about this time, the Reverend Lionel Fanthorpe applied to join the Society, but was turned down ... a rival to Underwood's ego? I would have told those toadies who had returned to "get lost" in either a polite or impolite form. Underwood's spiteful obituary of a true researcher in the field of ghosts, Andrew Green, was nothing short of a hatchet job, trying to disgustingly destroy the reputation of a rival without the fear of libel from a man who was now unable to defend himself. And those of us who knew Green know that his own research didn't need defending. Which is more than can be said of Underwood. A friend of mine jokes that he has only written one book, the rest being rehashes of the same stories and material, sometimes embellished and enhanced as time progresses. And those books contain many accounts of ghosts that have been thorougly demolished over a long period of checking Underwood's claims. But Underwood is blind to all this. So the same old, tired stories are repeated for a new generation to lap up. And few of the new generation will have the inclination to verify Underwood's claims. So the debunked stories live on ... The best way for Underwood to further paranormal research is for him to shuffle off this mortal coil and become of the spectres he professes to study.

| Nick Griffin's controversial appearance on the BBC's "Question Time" series almost

I don't follow politics very much, but the little I have heard of Mr.Griffith and his party, the BNP, just nurture a feeling of repugnance. But he does represent a political party, so aren't his views just as legitimate as the Tories, Lib-Dems and Labour? Regardless of whether the BNP is indeed "legitimate" as one MP queried, Question Time has played host to a number of celebrities, who didn't represent any party. They appeared as individuals with individual opinions and ideas. Why should Nick Griffin be excluded on the basis of the legality of the BNP, when he could have appeared on his own volition? Looks like some people in this country embrace democracy and the notion of freedom of speech, except when it impinges upon ideals that run contrary to their own. I fervently hope that the majority of adults of a voting age in this country can make up their own minds on Mr.Griffin's appearance without others foisting their own vetoes and opinions on him. Perhaps I'm an optimist in this matter, but I feel that Mr.Griffin's policies hardly had the masses change their voting allegiances in droves.

A little brickbat for the series as I can't really "forgive" the decision to make Zach the accomplice to a series killer last year. I can imagine that Eric Millegan was thrilled to hear that he was being written out. "Bastards!" he must have though, "What about my mortgage?" Still, its better than EastEnders, the producers of whom have a rather nasty habit of removing actors and actress who have transgressed the boundaries of decency (rather ironic considering the grotesque storylines) - everyone from one of the originals, Sandy Ratcliffe (remember her?) to Leslie Grantham. Oh yes, Dirty Den, whose re-emergence was a great ploy to claw in the ratings and who was hastily ditched when his opinions, and self manipulations via webcam, became well known. What a waste of time that was. Better to keep Den and ditch the rest of the EastEnders characters IM not-so-humble opinion! Coronation Street has a mixed record on this; removing "whats-his-name-who-played Les Battersby" over his racist views, but offering help to Craig Charles and Jimmi Harkishin over their drug addled exploits, so diligently reported in the gutter press.

| Due to being bullied at work, I decided to take time off to write my book;
this was in 2006/7 and because I had sufficient savings to live for a little
while, I couldn't (indeed, I wouldn't) claim unemployment benefit. When
I finished my book, in April 2008, I had a few more savings but started to
look for work, to no avail as regular readers of this will know.
When my savings ran out, I decided to apply for Job Seekers Allowance. But, since I was out of work for 2 years, I was ineligible for claims. I would get NI contributions, and my council provided me with housing benefit (£220 per month to pay a £730 rent!). And a token £3 reduction in my council tax even though my wife earns very little for a very demanding, but highly respected job. My friends and family have helped me as much as they can, but now we are in the desperate situation of having lived on overdrafts and credit cards for so long, we had accumulated a large debt and it is getting worse. We are trying to get help from Natwest after talking to the Consumer Credit people, but I am not confident. 19 years of debt free banking, then we run into difficulty and they turn down our plea for help. The direct debits on my credit card are still being paid even though I am over my limit; HOW is this fair? Of course, all this would have been alleviated to a great extent if Sunrise had been honourable people, but they have proved themselves otherwise. I cannot find work. And with my savings gone, my debt has spiralled out of control. We go to bed hungry at night because we don't have enough money to eat properly. We make a pittance selling our possessions on Amazon. My absolute priority has to be making sure we have enough money to feed our beloved guinea pigs. I sometimes think I'm better off dead. At least my wife would get the £10,000 life insurance policy on my credit card.

| Sorry I have not updated this webpage as frequently as I used to, I have been ill
suffering from excrutiating chest pains, for reasons that will become
clear.
My much anticipated role at Sunrise Systems, based in Waterbeach near Cambridge came to nothing, after the workers uncovered my expose of bullying at another IT firm. After the software developers mentioned to the upper echelons, Chris Russon and Dev Sebastian, that they would find it difficult working with me because they had judged me on what I had written, my offer of employment was withdrawn, even though the formal letter advising me that my services were not required mentioned nothing of the above situation. Since the workers there have judged me without meeting me, I shall do the same. I think they are small minded, petty idiots, who must condone bullying in a working environment since they were worried about my comments about my co-workers in the article. I notice that they have advertised on "The Cambridge Network" website advertising their staff as "friendly." Forgive me while I choke over my tears. Perhaps I had a lucky escape. If this is how they operate before I started to work for them, one can one speculate as to what it would have been like once I had joined. I am sad and angry that they woulnd't even give me a chance, and also that they judged me unfairly on a 2 month stint from 3 1/2 years ago. Still, to their credit, they did pay me a week's wages for nothing. I took the news very badly. I was due to visit my wife in the nearby Cambourne library, where I collapsed with chest pains. Fortunately the doctor's surgery was next door and they nursed me back to consciousness.

letter. We arrived at A&E at 12.45pm and checked in at the reception. One of the
nurses took an ECG reading, but found that she couldn't take blood as my wife's
veins are not very prominent. This is a very common occurrence, I must add.
So, we sat in the waiting room, on and off, for about two hours, and eventually went into the ward, where we were casually attended to. Through the curtain we could hear the doctors speaking and one of them remarked that my wife "hadn't been seen for two hours" - with a potential life threatening condition. Blood was finally taken at 4.15pm and an X-ray shortly afterwards, and then a trip to CDU to wait for the results. All clear, it would seem, except for some damage to muscular and soft tissue. We left the hospital at 6.00pm. I'd like to think that the doctors and nurses do their best, but get bogged down in the mire of paperwork and administration.

The examples below were taken a few days ago. For bigger images, click on the pictures. The van above belongs to Sawston and Cambourne dry cleaners, and is parked outside their shop. Is that any reason to park on the pavement? The above car, half on and half off the pavement. Sheer laziness; there are three carparks less than 5 minutes walk away! This was taken just off School Lane. This was taken on Scool Lane. Nice to know that our council tax is being spent on the upkeep of grass verges after people like this park on them. Whats wrong with parking on the road like everyone else? Woolthwaite Lane. We must be thankful that blind people or disabled people in wheelchair don't live on this road, they'd never get through. Another example is the silver car on the opposite side of the road that has a "Chinchillas are cool!" sticker on the right rear window. They frequently block the pavement, making it impassable. Another miscreant on Woolthwaite Lane. Oh, but silly me, the roads of Cambourne are "unadopted"; so motorists can do what they want!

| Well, thank goodness Big Brother is coming to an end. No, I'm not pleased because

people make up a notable fraction of the UK population, and yet nothing.
Oh yes, of course, I forgot! People in wheelchairs wouldn't be able to participate in those wonderful activities, and of course, a chair bound person wouldn't be able to descend the staircase to make that all-import grand entrance ... or those ignominious evictions. Perhaps such disabled people are aware that Big Brother only wants the deviants of society, the attention seeking twats who nauseate most of the populace, and they do not wish to participate in a TV travesty? | In January or February 2007, Allen and Overy, the lawyers for Autonomy Corporation in
Cambridge acted to pull an article from my website that they said was defamatory.
Or perhaps, it was because I had exposed the company's penchant for bullying
and its intolerable working practises. At the time, my website was hosted by BT Internet/Yahoo!
With absolutely no warning, and no explanation provided then or afterwards, BT
pulled my website and internet access.
The worst part of this is BTInternet were still charging me for their internet services for a long time afterward, at about £25 per month! My letters to BT (including a letter to the chairman) elicited either no reply, or garbled phone calls from workers in Indian, burbling pidgeon English. Eventually, the "payments" for a service eventually dwindled, but my attempts at a refund, and an explanation for the shoddy treatment I had received again yielded nothing. Ofcom couldn't/wouldn't help, my attempts to get the BBC consumer show "Watchdog" failed, as did my communications with the grown-up comic "The Sun." I approached Natwest to see if I could get a refund on my credit card (as this is what the payments were billed to) and were told that there was nothing they could do as I needed to contact BT! I didn't want to cancel my credit card as it had other standing orders on it and it would have created a huge hassle. When the time came to switch to Sky for my telephone service (they were my ISP after BT "pulled the plug"), I jumped at the chance. Bloody BT.

| Had a great night in the Monkfield Arms, Cambourne ... but to the parents sat in the corner of dining area, next to the doors to the kitchen (the rotund mother was wearing a black top and white trousers) do you think it is the sign of a selfish or responsible parent to keep your two under ten year old children up while you keep drinking until 12.20am? And there were other parents who kept their very young children up at a time well past what most reponsible parents would consider to be acceptable | ||

| Subject: The Northern Echo | ||
| Since I mentioned the CEN in one of my last posts, I thought I should mention one
of their kith - "The Northern Echo" - Darlington's rag for over a hundred years.
When I published my book, I sent along a complimentary copy. After all, here
was a local success story; although I no longer lived in the North East, I attended
arguably the worst school in the area, passed all my GCSEs, unlike most of my fellow schoolmates,
some of whom were the veritable scum of the earth (Indeed, I was the only one to pass GCSE
physics), and eventually got a PhD.
So, how did "The Northern Echo" publicise my book? By doing nothing. Odd that. A book about the Titanic disaster, and the newspaper having a link to the catastrophe (one of its first editors, W.T.Stead went down on the ship). My dad even contacted the newspaper and loaned them his paperback of the book and was promised that a story was possible. And nothing so far, two months on. When I was a denizen in the North-East, the reporting and standards of the "Echo" had fallen, almost tangibly. One of their reporting "crusades" involved a man who had been imprisoned for decades and showed no sign of being eligible for release. His crime? He worked on a farm and had set fire to one of the farmer's barns. Thinking that the punishment didn't suit the crime, the "Echo" campaigned for his release, against the better judgement of the police in the North East. Well, the man was released ... and went back and set fire to another of his old employee's barns! Seems that he had been sending hate mail and threats to the farmer for many, many years. Well done, "Echo". (The "Echo" also ignored my tip-off to them that I was going to the be on the television in 1993 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Doctor Who ... until, I did appear on the TV, and they were quick enough to send a reporter round then, and of course filing a story replete with errors!). | Just how committed are Cambridge book sellers, and the press, committed to the public? I have tried to organise talks and book signings for my own, self produced, successful book. You'd have thought that, as a local author (local to Cambridge), they would be interested in a bit of publicity for "one of their own." But no; the new library isn't interested, Borders never got back in touch and Heffers and Waterstones did reply when I pestered them. Heffers said that one of their managers didn't think they'd get an audience. Well, I'm sorry I'm not Stephen Fry or another Cambridge luminary. And thanks for returning my sample book, damaged and in an unsaleable condition. The same for Waterstones, but in this case they returned my book with any comment as to why they weren't interested. And then there's the Cambridge Evening News ... again, no interest at all. They seem to be more interested in running articles about a witch who has placed a curse on a catholic church. And then, years ago, I enquired about something that has been known about for years, in the research of Presdient Kennedy in 1963. Someone phoned up the CEN at the time of the murder with knowledge of the death of Kennedy. This was at a time when the shooting wasn't even known about in Dallas and yet the CEN knew first. The CEN wrote to me that "it was an urban legend" ... except that there is a file from the British Ambassador to America, and the American Ambassador to Britain detailing this precognitive phone call, and its even mentioned in the National Archives in America! So, CEN, a "little too busy" to deal with a genuine enquiry? Fob the public off, eh?

| As from Monday, I shall be returning to the software development industry near Cambridge. This is mainly because of my desire to write a book, which I complete in April 2008. I have been looking for work since then, and it has taken 18 months to finally find a position. This is through no fault of my own; I was diligently applying for positions as and when posts became available (and most of this was done myself- I don't trust or like recruitment agencies). Most of the companies or groups I applied to never replied, and of the few that did, they all invariably said that "I didnt have the requisite skills". Forgive my language, but what a bunch of crap! I could do most of those jobs with my eyes closed. The real reason? They probably got as far as my date of birth on my CV and thought "too old" (I'm 37). The IT industry is notoriously ageist and companies want people straight from University (Oxbridge preferable, as one job prospectus mentioned - so a PhD in a highly numerate subject - Nuclear Physics - but from a "lesser" University - York - doesn't count then?) So, to those companies that rejected me, or NEVER replied to my applications, I hope you change your working practises. Don't you agree, NHS, Anglia Ruskin University, RedGate, MathWorks, Frontier, WorkPlace Law, Assured, Hypertag, True Knowledge and dozens of others? | ||
