The Black House

Doors have been reported locking and unlocking by themselves, ghostly noises, including foosteps and a horse's hooves, strange lights and a spectre, said to be 16th century Squire Hilliard, has been observed at an upstairs window. Hiliard disapproved of his son's romance with a local farmer's daughter so he sent him away, telling the girl that he had died overseas. She soon became married to another boy but Hilliard's son was returning home when he saw his ex-lover leaving the church with her new husband. Hilliard's son rode off and was never seen again, even though his father spent a long time searching for him. The Squire died shortly afterwards, his search unsuccessful, but his spectre lingers.
