Buckland AbbeyThe ghost of Sir Francis Drake, according to legend, is the coachman of a jet black hearse led by black headless horses and chased by black hounds, supposedly in payment for asking the Devil to assist in his various "rewards" including his military battles and renovation of the abbey. Some embelishments to the tale say that the hearse is driven across Dartmoor, that "12 chattering goblins" precede the vehicle and that any living dog that hears the baying hounds is said to die instantly. The coach is said to be seen in the grounds, where visitors also reported Latin chants and singing. The banging of a phantom drum is said to herald a warning by Drake that England is in danger. A lone phantom monk is also said to be seen; sometimes he is joined by his brothers as they process through the long-gone corridors.
