Dockacre House

The ghost of Dockacre House is believed to be Elizabeth Herle who died in 1714 after she suffered a breakdown when her daughter died. Some believe her husband Nicholas conspired to exacerbate her condition by withholding food; some say that this was believed to be a cure for "madness". At any rate, the story reaches its sad climax when Elizabeth tried to escape and her husband shot her on the staircase - it is not known if this was deliberate or accidental. Elizabeth's phantom is said to wear a grey dress and looks inconsolable. The phantom sound of Nicholas's flute is supposed to herald a death in the house. Additionally, there are stories of pictures falling off the walls, a door opening by itself, a man in a wig looking out of a window at a milkman, and unexplained footsteps, bangings, scratchings and tappings in the house.
