Ye Olde Mint House
aka "The Mint House"
High Street, Pevensey, East Sussex BN24 5LF
In 1586, the owner returned home to find his mistress in bed with another man, and he manacled the girl and cut out her tongue. He then forced her to watch as he roasted her lover over a fire and then locked her in a room to die of starvation. The girl has been seen in the building, wearing a ruff and a tight bodice. Her face is also said to be seen staring out of the windows and her spectre observed running from the building screaming, with blood running from her mouth. A baby's screams are also sometimes to be heard in the building; this is believed to harken back to the time that the building was an inn and it is said that an old barmaid threw her child downstairs.
