The King's ArmsFore Street, Winkleigh, Devon EX19 8HQ 01837 682681 Plates, pots and pans being knocked over have been blamed on ghosts named George and Cecelia; the former dislikes changes and drops breakable items, while the latter is a little girl prone to mischief who knocks things over for attention and hangs on to waiter's aprons. Update 21/2/22: Landlady Faye Tompkins confirmed that "George and Cecilia (in particular) are still active around The Kings. Predominantly things being tipped off shelves in the kitchen or being moved in the restaurant area, but also other 'unexplained phenomenon' in the Kings Arms Cottage end of the pub regularly happens. Also in the past couple of years our cleaner has seen Cecilia. I do smell Georges pipe tobacco, this is a specifically sour old tobacco smell and it’s always around the Captains Table, but haven’t smelt it for a while. So in answer to your question, they are still very much around as recently as yesterday in fact!" In a touching postscript, Faye told me, "Actually, I shall tell you the story of the first time we walked through the door to view the pub, we were let in through the front door by the then manager and myself and Rich must’ve got about 2 steps in and there was a huge whoosh of energy, it felt like we were being hugged, we both felt it! I then said to Rich 'well that’s that then! It’s been decided for us'! The building chose us!" She also notes that many people comment on the "good atmosphere and vibe in the pub" and that it's "a happy place to be." Link: Daily Mirror |
