The Choughs Hotel

Judge Jeffreys, who hanged many people for treason following the Monmouth Rebellion, has been seen at the hotel, sometimes pacing an upstairs room or crouched in front of the fire in the bar. A manacled man in armour has also been reported in a corridor - he vanishes when asked to move. Guests have also experienced disturbances in their rooms at night: spiteful whispering and laughter from invisible ladies have unnerved many people, as has the spectral sounds of an argument; one guest who heard this awoke to find a red mark, like a whip mark on his face. Shadowy figures, slamming doors, and objects and glasses being moved have also been reported too.

Update: in June 2024, researcher Greg Hardman visited the Choughs and spoke to the landlord and the barman; "both are adamant that the place isn't haunted having not experienced anything themselves in the last 2yrs since moving in."
