The Walnut Tree

Roman Road, Aldington, Ashford, Kent TN25 7DT

The ghost of a long-dead smuggler is said to haunt this inn; he may be the shadowy figure also sometimes seen here. In addition, glasses being thrown about, a weight pressed down on the landlady and a bell ringing by itself have all been blamed on the phantom. Some also say that the sounds of scuffling and a body being dragged outside and to the well at the side of the pub can also be heard; this is explained in a local legend, which says that the pub was the base from the Aldington Gang, who smuggled goods in across the Romney Marsh by signalling through a small window to comrades on Aldington Knoll. While waiting for the signal, some of the men began playing cards and a fight erupted, with one member slicing open the throat of another. The phantom smuggler is alleged by some to be George Ransley, the leader of this gang.
