Shakespeare Colliery

The first coal main in Kent and the site of a later attempt at a Channel Tunnel, work was abandoned due to political pressure and also because coal had been found nearby. The colliery was also abandoned due to a series of accidents - and it is said that the sound of the marching feet of pit workers can still be heard.
