Baynards Park
Cranleigh, Surrey, GU6 8EQ
The ghost of Sir Thomas More has been seen wandering around the gardens. More was arrested and executed for various treasonable acts, including refusing to condemn the prophecies of Elizabeth Barton, which enraged Henry VIII. More's head was put on a spike at the Tower of London, but soon disappeared. It transpired that More's favourite daughter Margaret Roper had bribed a guard to give her the head and she hid it at her home at Baynard's Park for 9 years. After she died, the head was buried with her. The house burnt down in 1979. It said that More's spectre seems to be looking for something, though it is not recorded if his spectre lacks a cranium!
