A lady named Agnes Jaoman is said to haunt the area; she owned The Black Horse Inn (its name later being changed to "The Cause Is Altered" before it was demolished) and she is said to have poisoned the mayor's wife who was a catholic. Agnes was sentenced to prison, but released when Elizabeth I became monarch.
