Chambercombe Manor

Chambercombe Lane, Ilfracombe, Devon EX34 9RJ

A kitchen spit, a baby's crib, a clock pendulum without weights and curtain poles are some of the items reported to move here without any human aid. A tall lady in grey with a "faint smile" is said to haunt the area near where a hidden room was located in the 19th century; within was a fully furnished bedroom with four poster bed, upon which lay the skeleton of a woman. Legend says that she was rescued from a shipwreck but died soon afterwards. A local legend says that before the room was sealed up, resident stole the jewellery on the body and this prompted the paranormal activity witnessed to this day. Additionally, two little girls haunt the upstairs rooms (or the ground floor; reports vary), one of which follows tour guides. The two girls seem to come from different eras. A girl in a brown dress is said to be Lady Jane Grey, who started to appear here soon after she was executed. There are also unconfirmed tales of ghostly pirates.
