Abbot's Hospital

The Duke of Monmouth was imprisoned here prior to being executed for treason, after he had tried to use his status (he was the illegitimate son of Charles II) and his religious beliefs to force his claims on the throne. He had been banished to England but after the King's death, he returned to try and take charge of the Kingdom - and was defeated and arrested. He was temporarily held at the Abbots Hospital before being taken to the Tower of London where it took five blows to sever his head. His ghost has been seen at the hospital, where he has a "sorrowful gaze." However, some reports say that he is headless, which makes more sense. Additionally, the sound of partying have been heard coming from an empty 1st floor room overlooking the courtyard. This incident has not been repeated for many years apparently.
