The Pig at Bridge Place Hotel

The main ghost is a c.18th century servant carrying the corpse of her dead baby in a small basket. A webpage says that, "According to Peter Malkin [who lived here prior to c.2018] ... he sees the chambermaid with the laundry basket every month or two." The story is that the owner of the house c.1780, allegedly a man named Taylor, took a liking to her while his wife was in Scotland, recovering from a long illness. The chambermaid became pregnant but when the baby died shortly after being giving birth, the man refused to pay for a decent funeral. An alternate version says that, fearing the imminent return of his wife, he murdered his lover and child. The baby's cries come from the chimney breast in a ground floor room and it is thought that this could be where the body was hidden. There is also said to be a 'cavalier type figure of a man' in one of the bedrooms but it is unclear whether this is a one-off, as the only known report originates from 1969.

Updates 24/12/2025, 12/1/2026 and 19/1/2025: A contact stayed here a few days before Christmas 2025 and informed me of a few new details; the shadow of a man in a top hat has been seen coming out of a room which has also had unexplained noises issuing from within. My contact had his own experience, where the bathroom door creaked open. Shortly afterwards, and after turning the radiator off, the door creaked again, and then seconds later, 3 silver tins containing tea, sugar etc. flew off the shelf and hit the floor with quite a crash, "loud enough to have woken guests." Despite some thought and analysis on the matter, my contact, who is an engineer by profession, could not explain the tins being flung to the floor. I later asked about the room numbers and he replied, "Room 5 is where the staff noted activity. We were in Room 6, right next door."
