Basing House

In 1645, the house, owned by Royalist 5th Marquess John Paulet was besieged by Parliamentarian forces. On the first two occasions, the invaders were repelled, but then Oliver Cromwell arrived and the building fell to his forces, a quarter of the 400 inhabitants being killed in the process. The contents of the building were seized and the building damaged by rifles and by fire, with even the stones being plundered for re-use afterwards. It is said that the ghost of Oliver Cromwell returns to the site of his victory. Royalist soldiers have been seen on the site, as well as a noticeably tall man "leaving extreme coldness wherever the shadow is spotted". There has been the smell of smoke detected too, perhaps a phantom residue of when the house was destroyed, while in the visitors centre, footsteps have been heard on the stairs.
