A'Becketts29 High Street, Littleton Panell, West Lavington, Devizes, Wiltshire SN10 4EN Captain Henry Penruddock was a royalist and after fighting at Roundway in 1643, he sought refuge at the house of the Beckett family (known as A'Becketts), falling asleep in a chair. Soon afterwards he was discovered by parliamentary soldiers who shot Henry dead while he slept. It is said that, "His slumbering spectre still haunts the spot, though its appearances have grown less frequent since the house was rebuilt in 1903." Link: Cromwelliana |
