St Margaret's ChurchHigh Street, Rainham, Gillingham, Kent ME8 7JH 01634362023 On certain nights (at midnight on the nights of a full moon, according to some versions), it is said that the sound of horses hooves can be heard in the vicinity of this church. The origin of this story comes from a local tale that resident Christopher Bloor, who lived in the late 15th or early 16th century was seized as he rode in his coach by a posse of local husbands. Their ire was due to the fact that he had seduced their wives. Bloor was decapitated and his head placed on a pole at this church. His coach was then sent back to his home at Bloors Place with his headless body in the carriage. Versions of this tale state that Bloors "had been seen riding along Berengrave Lane in a phantom carriage, carrying his own head under his elbow. To add to the creepiness of the sightings, the carriage is said to be pulled by headless horses, driven by a headless coachman accompanied by headless footmen ... his spirit made nightly journeys from the church to Bloor's old home, only stopping to water his horses at Queens Court." Yet more additions (embellishments?) to the basic tale mention that "A black clad figure walks out of the churchyard and into the carriage where he removes his own head, and then they all proceed until it reaches Bloors Place."
