Beddington Park

Church Road, Wallington, Sutton, London SM6 7NN

The park was gifted by Sir Francis Carew to Queen Elizabeth whose ghost was supposed to prowl the area (according to local legend) at midnight by the river Wandle. A recent story is that the park is also supposed to be haunted by Sir Walter Raleigh; both he and his Queen were predominantly seen in Bunkers Alley which connects London Road and Croydon Road. Raleigh carries his head under his arm while Elizabeth is on horseback, also lacking a head. They both vanish where the avenue of trees stop. A different version of the story tells how they are seen on misty nights, with a headless Raleigh on his horse with Elizabeth following "jumping over the hedges of the alley, continuing their journey, onwards to Nonsuch Palace."
