Mecca Bingo RosehillBishopford Road, Rosehill, Morden, Surrey SM4 6BP 020 86482901 During conversion from the Gaumont cinema, a number of workers (sources variously cite one, three or four people) died, and it believed that one of them has returned as a spectre. A figure in grey has been seen by morning cleaners, usually in the circle at around 6am and the sound of a long-removed organ has also been reported too. Glasses falling from the bar and shelves, beer taps turning on by themselves and noises coming from the building when it is empty have been blamed on the ghost, nicknamed "Fred," who has sometimes been blamed for the deaths mentioned above and which also include a boilerman who fell down the stairs and a nightwatchman who passed away from a heart attack during his shift. An interview with a manager in 2001 stated that activity has lessened over the years but there had still been reports of inexplicable bangs and the sound of people on the stairs when no-one was there. The area of the club's bar has also had incidents of something being seen out of the corner of the eye; some of these latter incidents were in the area of the projection box. In addition, after being called out in the night for one of the frequent alarm activations, a shadowy figure was seen on CCTV standing next to the bar. Another ghost may be a 17th century cavalier in a red cloak, seen by one bingo player. Link: My London |
