Theatre Royal (Closed)

Addington Street, Margate, Kent CT9 1PW

One of the ghosts that roams the theatre is that of Sarah Thorne who was a big theatre star in the 1850s. She was also the manager of the theatre. After she died, the theatre slowly went into decline, and it is believed that this is the reason she is still haunting the location. Another ghost is that of an actor who was fired; he bought a box within the theatre and committed suicide during a performance (in some versions, by throwing himself into the orchestra pit). Patrons to the theatre were so uncomfortable when seated in the box that the theatre eventually boarded it up. The mutterings and whispering that seem to come from the box have been attributed to him, as have glowing balls of light seen hovering in the area. There is also said to be a scream that begins back-stage before progressing through the theatre and goes out of the stage door.
