It is felt Major Rickman, a previous owner who shot himself after being saddled with huge debts, is one of the resident spectres here. There have been reports of doors slamming, a light coming on in a room despite having its power isolated, footsteps, knockings, wailings, screams, a lift (and a kettle!) operating by themselves, taps turning on, the smell of lavender, giggling, whistling, bangings and rattling (for instance, keys). Some of this activity is said to originate from children who it is thought died in a fire together with their nanny. In addition to Rickman himself, visible phantoms include a Victorian woman in the studio theatre area (she may be the lady in a red dress on the staircase...?), a man who drowned himself in the nearby lake, figures seen in the peripheral vision and a "menacing" looking child, seen laughing in the hallways. The theatre also plays host to a phantom who likes to hide things. There are many other stories!
