Sign of the Angel

An elderly lady, thought to be the owner of the inn in the early 20th century has been seen downstairs and some of the guests rooms.

Author Ruth Roper Wylde revealed in 2024 that at some point in the past, a worker was so frightened by something that he stopped work, leaving his tools behind. Another worker (a carpet fitter) in the 1960s saw a ghost walk from the door by the stairs across to the dining room and like the later worker, he too wouldn't stay any longer. [The Weird Wiltshire website says that "the ghost walked from the entrance to an old staircase to the attic, [removed years and years before], down the stairs to the door to the dining room"]. A ghost was also said to have entered a bedroom in the middle of the night.
Update 12/1/24: Maddy replied to my email about anything encountered recently at the hotel. Although she had never experienced anything personally, she gave a list of phenomena encountered by others:
A customer who repeatedly returned to the building over the past 40 years was explaining to her about how the old housekeeper had an image of one of their dining rooms and in the corner a ghostly woman sat on a chair, when no one was there.
Staff have had doors slammed in the faces, and things have fallen off of shelves randomly.
They have on-site living for staff and the staff member living here at the time saw a woman in a dress standing at the bottom of the garden staring at him.
The chandeliers in the dinings rooms also spin continuously, with no breeze or gusts of wind.
The current housekeeper has been outside one of the rooms upstairs (room 4) and she has seen a white figure walk through, in a dress once again, while no one was in the building.
Many years ago a chef told his colleagues about how he once came out of the gents toilets (upstairs) and he saw a lady just stood staring at him, she then proceeded to walk through the wall and completely disappear. He came back downstairs to the kitchen completely pale in shock.
