St Peter Ad Vincula Church

Seen in the vicinity of this church and indeed, other areas of the town is Lady Granville. During the Civil War, her husband took up the Royalist cause and was incarcerated at the Tower of London. His son, Francis, was killed in a skirmish with Oliver Cromwell's men and he was buried at Broad Hinton, a monument being erected by his mother. Their other son, William fled overseas after Naseby. Afterwards, Lady Granville learned that Cromwell would visit her to receive taxes that he felt should have been paid to him not to the King but the night before he arrived she gathered all her valuables and buried them. When Cromwell arrived, she set fire to her house. Lady Granville had a nervous breakdown and could not recall where she had hidden her fortune and it remains lost to this day. She lived long enough to see her husband released and her exiled son return home.
