St Bartholomew the Great ChurchCloth Fair, Smithfield, City of London, London EC1A 7JQ 0207 600 0440 The ghost here resembles a monk and is thought to be Rahere, who founded St Bartholomew's Hospital, which was once part of the church. The phantom has been seen near Rahere's tomb; other phantoms include a man on the pulpit delivering a silent sermon, and an old man in "antiquated clothes" and a hat at an angle; he is thought to be William Hogarth who worshipped here. The smell of burning flesh and the sound of screams are thought to be Catholics burnt under the orders of Queen Elizabeth I. Link: Great British Ghosts |
