Castell Coch

A Cavalier haunts the castle allegedly; he hid a stash of treasure during the Civil War but was killed before he could retrieve it; another version of this tale says that the treasure is buried by three eagles, the cavalier being a separate phantom. Another phantom is that of a "White Lady" , said to be Dame Griffiths, whose son fell into a pool on the grounds and was never seen again. She never recovered from her loss and her spectre is said to still be seen to this day, searching for her child. A 2023 newspaper states that, "The grounds are also believed to be haunted by 'Mallt-y-Nos', a 'night-fiend' who shrieks at those doomed to die. According to Welsh mythology, she loved hunting so much in her lifetime that when she died she became a companion of Arawn, king of Annwn (the Otherworld), and rides with him in his wild hunt during which she drives the Cŵn Annwn (hounds of Annwn) onwards, chasing sorrowful souls to Annwn."

Update 3/10/20: Cori-Lee Blackman, the Head Custodian informs me, "We have not had any incidents as you describe, at Castell Coch to my knowledge ... For myself, I have worked on site for over 10 years and have not witnessed anything yet that was not able to be explained away."
