Leanne Westwood, the museum curator, informed me, "The paranormal activity at Valence House goes through periods of activity and in-activity. That being said, most staff that work here have experienced at some point something that they cannot explain. It is hard to recall everything, but I will list a few items of activity that have occurred over the last few years.
A member of staff, alone in the building at the time, was locking up at the end of the day to go home, and as they approached a fire door to lock it, a disembodied male voice asked them 'What are you doing here?' - with an inflection on the word 'you'. The staff member didn’t answer, proceeded to lock the door (they had to pass through the area where the voice had come from to do this) and quickly left the building.
Historically we have a lot of activity on our main staircase with, female staff and visitors being pushed down by unseen hands. A member of staff recently took a serious fall down these stairs, badly injuring her ankle, and a female volunteer was pinned against the wall.
Early one morning before opening, a member of staff was walking along the top corridor when they saw the remains of a dissipating apparition - all they saw was the lower arm (in a black sleeve), a white cuff and a hand, which disappeared before their eyes.
Another member of staff saw some ghostly legs walking up the former servant’s staircase late one evening.
Each year we undertake a deep clean of the museum. One year a member of staff came in at the weekend on their own to get on top of the cleaning and heard loud bangs on a metal door behind them and dragging sounds from the floor above.
We regularly hear the interactive displays being played with on the first floor when the building is closed to the public.
When our 12 foot Christmas tree goes up each year, we often hear the metal bells hung on it being played with."
