The most famous ghost here is gamekeeper Robert Scott, but there are variations in how he met his fate. Some say an escaped convict murdered him on the estate, while others blame the deed on a poacher. He is seen in the ground and in castle, "making a determined ascent up the staircase," where hurried footsteps and "low, chattering voices" have been heard. A blacksmith has also been seen in the grounds at Margam, and shadows noted darting across the walls at the castle (this author was also confronted briefly by a looming black shape that blocked out the lights of the distant street lights). Auditory reports include murmuring voices, running footsteps and children's laughter - indeed, youngsters wearing Victorian clothing have been seen "flitting in and out of rooms." Items disappearing or moving by themselves have been blamed on these phantom wraiths, and people have reported rocks and other small items being thrown.
