Dick Turpin's father is said to have once been the landlord here - and his famous son has been said to gallop at people and swerve away at the last second. The highway robber is also said to haunt the upstairs rooms, causing bangs and crashes through the night; his steed is said to have been seen in the car park. The downstairs area is said to be haunted by "Black Dick", who was killed when he was run over by a horse and cart outside the pub. A late 2023 article on a website claims that, "The inn is also said to be haunted by a previous landlord Juan Porero, who fought a fatal duel with his brother Francesco after falling in love with the same woman. Juan is buried near the pub, which he haunts to this day."
