Pond Square

Highgate, Camden, London N6 6BA

An impromptu experiment in frozen food led to an unlikely ghost. Sir Francis Bacon, while being driven in the area of the square, pondered how grass remained fresh under snow, and he ordered his coachman to acquire and kill a chicken. He then filled the body with snow but Bacon caught a chill and soon after died. It is said that a partially plucked chicken has been seen squawking in alarm and running around in circles before disappearing into a wall. However, there are some doubts about this story and the phantom itself! There are even claims that the sounds of an invisible horse and carriage have been heard here.
