The Anchor Inn

A young girl wearing Puritan clothing, and nicknamed "Sara" has been seen in an upstairs room and the dining room. Various tales describe how she was either a witch who was executed in 1666, or that she fell pregnant by a local landowner. When his wife found out the poor girl was imprisoned in the building until she gave birth at which point both were murdered. Perfume has also been smelt, babies heard crying, and knives, remote controls and other items have been flung around. Between 1981 and 1983, a resident's son who slept in the top room awoke to find an old lady standing by the end of his bed. She told him that everything was OK and to go back to sleep. In the late 1960s/early 70s, the next door residents talked of "a little elderly lady with hair pinned up neatly wearing late Victorian or Edwardian dress (a long dress with full white apron) ... [standing] at the bottom of the stairs" and that she might also have been seen by the witness's sister in the bedroom tidying things in the cupboard.
