The Cross Keys24 Bridge Street, Usk, Monmouthshire NP15 1BG 01291 672 535 Researcher Greg Hardman obtained the following legend during a trip to the establishment; the story says that, in order to prevent a young lady seeing a local man whom her parents thought was unsuitable, they incarcerated her in an upstairs room, which is now room 3. Eventually, she killed herself by eating poisonous berries that grew outside her bedroom window. Greg writes, "Another interesting note, the inn was the initial site where prisoners were held prior to being taken down to the old bridge to be hung for their crimes before the first town Gaol was built....the 'condemned man's' cell is situated in the bar area ... In recent times, although the barman hasn't witnessed anything himself, there have been reports of the figure of a female in room 3, footsteps & thuds apparently heard in the upstairs corridor, sudden temperature drops and the flickering of lights. |
