In a building known as "The Gables", an "evil looking" man was/is seen near the fireplace in the storeroom in the upper floors and moved objects around; shop assistants do (did?) not like going up there. The phantom of an old lady ("doing embroidery" apparently) has also been seen too; St Albans Museums adds that "it has been said that people who have seen her experience an overwhelming desire to jump out of the window." These reports refer to accounts from previous tennants of the building; whether these phantoms still manifest is not known. The museums website also notes that, "Hauntings were reported even by members of the Free French army who were stationed there during the Second World War."
