When this was "The Wellington" pub, occurrences were blamed on a phantom little boy who was looking for his mum; it is said that he was killed by a coach turning into the yard in the 18th century. A barmaid complained of "icy cold lips" kissing her on the forehead and hands stroking her hair; there were also stories of footsteps, heavy furniture being dragged in empty rooms, something bouncing on the ends of beds during the night, lights turning on and off and a soda siphon rising in front of a customer who voiced his scepticism about ghosts! The phenomena continued when the pub became a butcher's shop and included banging doors, rubbish being pushed over, interference with tills and even the puncturing of the tyres on the manager's car. During this time, a "small misty figure" was seen in the cellar, and another phantom was also observed in the yard, his arms folded. Now an opticians, staff have reported the sensation of cobwebs on the faces, shirts being tugged, customers files disappearing and then reappearing, and lights and heating turning on by themselves; indeed there are other reports of interference with electrical equipment over the years.
