It is said that interference with the barrels comes from the phantom of an old woman, who used to sit in a rocking chair in an alcove and resents intrusion; it is in the cellar that temperature drops have been recorded, and the ghost is blamed for blocking pipes, making light bulbs "pop" out of their sockets and breaking wine bottles. An additional ghost may be one that haunted the nearby pub "The Swan" (now "The Swan Youth Project"); said to be a man that was buried alive under a cartload of stone, the landlord in 1977 held an exorcism and he believed that the ghost moved to "The Crown". Another phantom is that of an Edwardian man who is dressed in grey. He has been seen in an upstairs room and has been known to cross the road from near St Peter's Church to the pub.
