Just before the smoking ban in pubs came into effect, a customer had his cigar knocked downwards twice, causing the accumulated ash to fall to the floor. He had not moved his hand at all! On another occasion after closing time when the pub was empty, two regulars helped out by clearing away empty glasses; after seeing to one room, they went to tidy away another. But when they returned to the first room, the glasses had been put back on the tables. There are stories that a soldier from the Crimean era haunts the pub.
