Littledean Hall

A cavalier has been seen, sitting in one of the rooms. This spectre dates from the time when Parliamentarian forces came to the hall just as Royal supporters were visiting; a number of cavaliers were killed in the ensuing skirmish. Another ghost is that of a black man in a dark coat and carrying a candle; he was the manservant of Charles Pyrke who lived here in the 18th century. The servant had killed Pyrke soon after the maid, his sister, gave birth to a baby boy which was reputed to be Pyrke's. The baby died mysteriously shortly afterwards. The black servant was hanged for the murder but is still said to walk the building. Other apparitions include a spectral monk, who walks from the dining room to the library; former owner Richard Brayne who appears as a gardener on the drive way; and a black mist that emerged from a crack in the wall and enveloped a staff member in the tea room. There are also stories of poltergeist-like activity (items moving, doors opening and closing and so on), and the sounds of sword fighting, screams, rappings, slamming doors and gunfire. Also reported are the smell of roses, burning toast and flesh. There are numerous other stories too, including "The Blue Bedroom's" reputation being that is too haunted to sleep in!
