White Horse Lane, Burnham Green, Welwyn, Hertfordshire AL6 0HA

The CAMRA website tells us that the pub was "named after the phantom headless stallion, slain during the English civil war and which is said to haunt the adjacent road which leads to Woolmer Green." The landlord provided a link to a page on his website giving more history; royalist Farmer Pennyfather was beaheded during the civil war, and the roundheads tried to take his favourite horse as a prize but when it would not leave his old master's land, it was beheaded too. It has since been seen in the area of Pennyfather's land, and "every horse" that had ridden down the Lane had "let out a harrosing whinnie, bucked on its hind legs and turned around ... sensing danger." Pennyfather's land is now the pub's beer garden. However, the landlord admitted that he slightly embellished the story for marketing reasons; "It actually refers to the neighbouring lanes and fields and not our beer garden as stated. I have not witnessed anything personally to tell you."
