Gloucester Cathedral12 College Green, Gloucester, Gloucestershire GL1 2LX 01452 528095 There is at least one ghostly monk who wanders the cathedral; one is seen at St Michael's Gate and may be the same person who maintained order as pilgrims gathered to pay their respects at the tomb of Edward III who was murdered nearby. Another monk (assuming they are not one and the same) has been observed outside the south transept, near a small door. Another monk, not seen recently, was noted in the chapter house. Additionally, a group of poorly dressed children from another era are reputed to run around the cloisters playing. Meanwhile, the Church House in the Cathedral Close plays host to a young boy in tattered clothing; in Tudor times, orphans were employed to stoke and maintain the fires in the guest rooms and this activity fits this sad spectre's behaviour. According to legend, a nun was walled up in the south transept, and her spectral sighs can be heard occasionally. Link: Gloucestershire Live |
