Alton Court

The elderly, depressed spectre of Clara Markey has been seen walking from Alton Court to Copse Cross Street, a route known by locals as Old Maid's Walk. She became romantically involved with Roger Mortimer, a gardener at the Court but her father had plans for her to marry a wealthy suitor whom she didn't like. Roger vanished a few days before the arranged wedding, his battered body found in the River Wye. Despite a verdict of suicide, Clara was sure her father was responsible, but he insisted there would be no delay in the wedding. During the ceremony, Clara saw something horrifying and fainted, the shock being so great that she never spoke again. The next day, she vanished from Alton Court and was found wandering around Copse Cross street where Roger was buried. She never recovered and would regularly follow the same route from her home to the street.
