An old lady in black silk and white lace from the Victorian era has been seen here. She is said to be very lifelike. She turns electrical equipment, including lights, on and off, and opens and closes doors, often without seemingly contacting them. She is also said to sit in the lounge watching TV but pays no attention to the living around her! Other phenomena include "wailing cries", to be heard late at night.
Author Ruth Roper Wylde also talks of the phantoms of a Grey Lady and a stable hand; however, there may also be a "White Lady" who is seen in the corridor between the bar and the kitchen. It is said that the Grey Lady will stare back at you if you look at the round windows in the eaves facing the square at night. There is a rumour that the face of King Charles I would show in a mirror. In addition to these apparitions, items would move by themselves (for instance, one of the cups on a hospitality tray moved to other side of the room within seconds of the employee turning away), a toilet flushed by itself and a chambermaid found her vacuum cleaner turned off at the socket in the dining room. She ended up trailing a long cable from another room.
