RAF Henlow

Ernest "Brainy" Dobbs was seconded to this RAF base, and had an interest in devising parachutes but sadly was electrocuted after ignoring warnings when he partook in "Balloon Jumping" in May 1927. His old room had a history of disturbances such as voices being heard and items being found moved. However, the most dramatic incidents occurred in October 1981 when the new resident heard the sound of someone scraping at his drawers during the night, but no one was there when he turned the light on. He also heard the sound of books toppling to the floor. With the light on, he even saw one slide across the shelf, then fly across the room landing on the bed next to him. Events culminated on another night when he entered his room to find a whirlwind inside, despite the window being closed. His possessions were circulating in the wind, and he heard a distant voice saying, "look out...the trees." His colleagues pulled him out of the room at which point the wind stopped and everything fell to the ground. His CO informed him of some of the details the next day and declared the room would be used for storage from then on. Also, in 1973, a security guard was returning an item to a hanger known colloquially as the "Pickle Factory" when he heard the footsteps of a man and a dog, complete with "jangling collar, snuffles and bark." Nothing was seen, and he soon saw footprints appearing on the frosty floor, along with dog paw prints. The prints when to a locked door and he followed them outside to the middle of the airfield whereupon they stopped in the snow; the guard could also hear the bark of a dog on the wind. It has been said that Dobbs used this hanger for his parachute experiments, sometimes using his pet dog to test his contraptions.
Paranormal researcher Nat Doig lived on site as a young girl in the early to mid 1980s and heard some interesting, but unverified tales. She was told of a large officers house surrounded by cherry trees; the story was that a husband had shot his wife there and that at 9pm you could hear shots ring out. There was also a rumour of airman killed in WW2 who still haunted the high school and appeared in the girls toilets (the location of which was originally his office) and had also been seen floating backstage in the assembly hall. At another time, there was a rehearsal for a show to be held by the youngesters in a hall near to the sergeant's mess and the RAF camp churches. A Brownie was in the store room next door to the stage, waiting for her cue to appear but she never emerged. Her friends heard her scream and went they went to her assistance, she said that she had seen a man in sergeant's uniform hanging from a beam of wood. He had then vanished.
