When this was clothing store Peacocks, a "grieving ghost" was heard in the rear of the building. It is said that, when a pub used to occupy the site, the landlady's son William Gatward was executed for highway robbery and his mother retrieved his body after it had fallen from its gibbet and buried it in the cellar. It is not known if these manifestations still occur or even if the story is true!
