The Woolpack

A grey figure passed through the chef's bedroom and there are also spectres of a drowned seaman (he may be the one with a ponytail who walked through the publican and is searching for "Mary"), a Catholic priest who suffocated while hiding in a barrel, a headless monk, and a former landlord called George who was killed for helping to conceal the monk. Orbs of light and some poltergeist-type behaviour have been reported, and the landlord's dog refuses to go into the cellar. A 2024 newspaper adds another ghost, Admiral Edward Vernon who died in 1757. It says that, "Initially [he was] a Navy officer [and] later went into politics and earned the nicknamed ‘Old Grog’ after supporting legislation that watered down rum on navy vessels. His spirit is said to have been spotted in full 18th century Naval Officer uniform. Supposedly a number of the Woolpack's customers laughed at the idea of their favourite watering hole being haunted. However, their laughter turned to fear when the Admiral is said to have ripped a sign from the wall and hurled it to the ground in response to their scepticism."
