Hay CastleOxford Road, Hay-on-Wye, Powys HR3 5DG 01497 820079 A local legend talks of a giantess named Matilda (or Maud) de Braose, who made a deal with the Devil to construct the castle in one night; another version is that she built it herself, carrying stones in her apron in one day and one night. King John and William and Matilda de Braose were friends until there was a falling out (probably involving money as William owed the King a large sum), and the King demanded their son as hostages to ensure his loyalty. The family fled to Ireland but were pursued by John. While William escaped to France his wife and eldest son were captured in Scotland and imprisoned at either Corfe Castle or Windsor where they were ordered to be starved to death. Matilda's ghost is said to have been seen at Hay Castle. Link: Weird Wiltshire |
