Union Street RoundaboutUnion Street/Clapham Road/Rolf Avenue/Tavistock Street, Bedford, Bedforshire MK40 2SD The ghost of "Black Tom" stands by the road where this roundabout is located and was the site where he was hanged in the 18th century; he was buried with a stake through his heart. Despite appeals for clemency, this rogue, who was not violent, was hanged anyway when a petition had not been handed over because the gaoler had not been bribed enough. His phantom is described as "a cloaked and hunched figure" although a daytime sighting descibed "a figure in dark, old-fashioned clothes staggering towards them ... His head was lolling to one side, his face purple and blotched." The ghost of Tom is sometimes seen with another unidentified spectre. Link: Weird in the Wade podcast Link: Bedford Today |
