The ghost of a man in 18th century garb "like a pilgrim" (some say the figure was just white) has been seen in the Combination Room; he may be a bursar (James Dawes) who hanged himself in 1789 in an adjoining turret; in 1997, a figure was seen in this area floating about a foot above the ground and moving towards a bay window; one witness described it as "cigar-shaped and person-sized"; another later witness said it was "balding, small, slightly built. He was wearing a wide collar similar to that of a pilgrim and seemed to be holding a large hat." Knockings from behind the oak panelling, rattlings and cold spots/drops in temperature were also experienced in the room as well. There were accounts of a dark presence crouching down near the north entrance, seemingly staring at something in the nearby graveyard (it is not known if an exorcism was successful); and in the mid-20th century, there was a story of a blue lady on a staircase, too.
