A former college fellow named Christopher Round was having an affair with Mary Clifford, married to Round's colleague Phillip Collier. After a night's heavy drinking, Collier fell into the open-air pool while Round, seeing this as a way of removing his love rival, let him drown. He was overcome with grief, and Round’s ghost can be seen, it is said, standing by the pool and in the area of the Mulberry Tree on every full moon and on the anniversary of Collier’s death where he contemplates his selfish act. Round's ghost is described as a tall, elderly gentleman wearing a beaver hat. Other versions of this tale exist saying that Clifford also drowned at the same time.
