The phantom upstairs is a sad, beautiful lady in a long gown, rumoured to be the daughter of the farmer when the pub was a farm. Her boyfriend went overseas to find his fortune, promising to return to marry her - but he never returned. She was said to have become depressed and "wasted away". Her spectre is said to only appear to women. The ghost downstairs in this pub is a young man in a red jacket, perhaps a soldier.

Update 12/4/26: Greg Hardman informs me that the landlady told him that there had been no experiences that she knew of. A display in the local church talks about the history of Pembridge and mentions the ghosts at the pub; "One is a young woman who awaits the return of her lover from some long ago war. Nobody knows for certain which war and whether he was killed or simply deserted her. She apparently only makes an appearance to other women. The other ghost is that of a soldier who walks the corridors in a scarlet tunic, sometimes carrying a sword and at other times a drum. Some have speculated that the two ghosts are connected - the soldier may be the woman's lover but the two never meet."
