The Barley Mow

Priory Square, Studley, Warwickshire B80 7BA
01527 854386

Spectral monks have been seen here, one of which was nicknamed "Charlie"; an Augustinian Priory was nearby and its brewhouse is thought to have occupied part of the site of the Barley Mow. A pet dog was terrified of a corridor in the building and became so nervous that the owners had to get rid of it. Doors with heavy latches would be found opened after they had been locked, and an assistant manager once said that after locking up and turning the alarm on, he saw the silhouette of a woman with long blonde hair in his doorway but when he approached her, she had gone. He had heard the sound of furniture moving downstairs but the alarm was never activated. A waitress was delivering a meal when she heard a voice behind her saying, "I'm watching you," but there was no-one there. And on one occasion, customers complained that their order for coffee had not arrived - when they gave a description of their server, it matched no-one working there. Other phantoms include a man and a women in conversation in the bay window; the man was aged 24, with a round face and dressed in black, in a frockcoat, buckled shoes and a tricorn hat. The woman's description was described as pretty but was not so well defined. It is said that the time around November 5th is the most paranormally active.

Update 16/9/20: The pub responded to my Facebook request for any recent phenomena; "Having worked in and lived above the pub for several years now, I have heard many rumours but never experienced anything out of the ordinary I'm afraid."
