"Captain Slash" (George Catherall) is seen moaning in the churchyard at Christmas time; he was the leader of a gang of villains before he was arrested and hanged. A ghostly bride is also said to haunt the graveyard at midnight on Christmas Eve; according to one witness, she is a red-haired girl who wears only a "flimsy white dress." The story is that many years ago a couple were married in the church at Christmas time, but hours later the groom passed away and a month later the broken-hearted bride revisited the churchyard and killed herself. Another legend is that whomever sees the ghost will die soon afterwards, while some say that if men take her up on her offer for a kiss, they kill pass away a month later. (It should be noted that it is claimed that the red head and the lady in white are two separate ghosts.) In addition, ghosts of children allegedly play amongst the gravestones.
